UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Good afternoon :coffee:

It was minus 11 this morning and you'll just have to take my word for it. I thought of posting but I went back to bed instead.

Healing up is going to take longer than expected, I guess. Could have been worse. At least I have complete function of both hands despite the fact that they cramp a lot these days. I'm beginning to think PC building will never quite be what it used to be. The power balance is the key, but it really is all about band width. Most folks are comfortable with storing data elsewhere, such as on cloud servers and even a Raspberry Pi can store data on a huge external drive. So the phasing out of the Desk Top and the Tower is a real thing. Who needs a PC builder? It is relegated to the status of the hobbyist and his (or her) kits. 😕

I have been laughed at for my seemingly outrageous statements about band width but one need not be a rocket scientist to make this determination. If one has access to a keyboard and an interface it is enough. All the processing can be done elsewhere and it can be done at blazing fast speeds with fibre. So let's be real. The golden age is over. There is no need for these cumbersome devices anymore. We can all join the Borg and be happy with keyboards and a little device that we get from our ISP. . . IF we wish. Of course, monitors are a different matter. We already have wall-sized monitors with interfaces built in.

I didn't expect that PCs would take this direction but the oversight is entirely my own. I can't say that I'm crazy about it but time marches on and I often wonder about how much we are really giving up in the name of progress. Anyway, enough of these cheery thoughts. I need to look up some voltages.

Ciao!

Good Afternoon Scannerman :-) :coffee:

I hope you will recover faster then they say :-) but yeah.. healing up do take some time.. and it can be different from time to time, depending on the body and how much we actually follow doctors order. 😇 as overdoing things do make the healing go slower.

I agree.. with smartphones and tablets laptops and desktops becomes more of businesses needs in the office... or as a hobby for gamers and nerd like us.🤓
I know several people that only have a smartphone, then a tablet or a smart-TV as compliment to the small screen on the smartphone.
and with Ram prises skyrocketing and SSD.. even more will abandon desktops.
So if Ram prises dont go down the next 2 years and people cant afford buying desktops.. they will start to use their smartphones and tablets even more.
As for computing in the cloud.. some things work and some dont.. Just disk-storage.. 1Gbit internet is like a 5400rpm HDD.. to get speeds that is like Sata3 SSD has to be around 10Gbit fiber. So realtime storage as in not having a internal disk.. that is a few years away as then everyone need at least 10Gbit connections.
But some things work.. as using computing in a datacenter for AI or some big calculation where you dont need realtime streaming.

I will probibly never-ever build a computer for someone else as people nowadays go and buy OEM solutions and then its 99% Laptops.. only Gamers sill use Desktops at home.

But i still build things for myself.. both to save money, and i like to build things that either is odd or to get an old retro look.
The day i get hold of new hardware, my next desktop will look like this.

So if Ram prises dont go down the next 2 years and people cant afford buying desktops.. they will start to use their smartphones and tablets even more.
I rather doubt that RAM will decrease much in price in the next 2 years. The incentive to drop RAM pricing simply isn't there. How much less incentive to drop the price when DATA BANKS are at the mercy of the suppliers? Everyone wants/needs power. Is Joe Pion going to give Mr. Fat Cat any competition when all his data is being stored on the Cloud?? There is a huge power play over power these days and business will always have an edge in politics where decisions about infrastructure are being made. He who has the gold makes the rules.
At the rate that fiber is expanding across my country, even in remote areas that pass for wilderness (such as where I live) the speeds you refer to are feasible and already being met. I can get 10Gb where I live if I want it. I just don't want to pay for it. Meanwhile, NVMe can be run in a PC the size of my hand. This does not supply a PC builder with a whole lot of incentive to keep on building.
But some things work.. as using computing in a datacenter for AI or some big calculation where you dont need realtime streaming.

I will probibly never-ever build a computer for someone else as people nowadays go and buy OEM solutions and then its 99% Laptops.. only Gamers sill use Desktops at home.
Meanwhile, my daughters are already doing real time with gaming and Steam accounts. Microsoft and Mine Craft are among their favourites. And yes, just as you say, they mostly play on laptops now. Admittedly, that's partly my fault. I bought the other other daughter a nice work station laptop with a high end chip and 32GB of RAM and she pretty much disappeared with it. Oh, she's very pleased with it alright. Meanwhile, the other other other daughter has the huge Alienware laptop and pretty much does the same. They have abandoned their desktops for the privacy of their bed rooms.

I've been building PCs for the past 20 years but I haven't built one for a client for nearly a year now and it is rare that I ever build a PC for anyone now outside of family. It's just not worth it. Back in the day (especially in oil patch communities) there were many people with jobs that had a "hurry up and wait" policy. While workers would wait for their employers to initiate jobs they would game. What else can one do in the dead of winter while waiting for the go ahead on a job? Some of these workers would pay handsomely for a good gaming PC built to handle rugged conditions. I used to build those. Some of those PCs are still running today, but now my services are no longer required and technically I'm already retired.

Times have changed. Yup. I'm a dinosaur alright. Still, I salute you for keeping old hardware alive and building "Sleeper" PCs is actually a thing these days. Much like in the days where people would put high performance gear in modest looking vehicles. Kind of reminds me of the old days where hot rods were a thing, but this is niche enterprise. I have no idea what I'm going to do with all these desk tops.

I dont believe it will either... that's why i wrote "if Ram prises dont go down" ;-)

I have been able to have 10GBit for 3-5 years now.. But i dont need it so i keep down my costs with a 250/250 connection. :-)
But to bring in that kind of solutions then 90 or even 95% of the people must have at lest 10Gbit.. otherwise it cant be a new "normal".

One of my nieces still have a desktop for her Gaming as a laptop get to loud when the GPU and CPU is under heavy load. and she likes the big monitor and real keyboard and mouse :-)
But otherwise.. no one around me have a desktop anymore..

I build my first PC 34 years ago.. then i had it as a job for several years building custom made desktops and workstations both for businesses and regulat customers.. So i have no clue of how many desktops i have built in my life.. and the last one isn't built yet :-) as i have my retro computer waiting as soon i get hold of some hardware that is half modern. :-) and i have my low-power server cluster project I'm going to build when i get time for it.
But as you say, its not worth building desktops for others anymore.. or even upgrade them.

Sleepers is fun.. both Cars and PC's
I dont think i am classified as dinosaur yet, as i still like modern functionality using AI and diving into IT security.. but i want it in a retro outfit as i like the old look, but i want modern performance.

My old friend, Jim, used to build sleepers. Not sure what became of those. Perhaps I have possession of a few of them but I haven't looked (inside) to see yet. Too many PCs to deal with atm. Jim took the AMD road while I went with Intel. I wasn't so much a brand name fan boi as much as I liked how Intel made RAID so easy to set up. Alas, when the whole Spectre/Meltdown fiasco hit I started taking another look at AMD and purchased my first retail platform just to play with. I did manage to make RAID work on that unit but with an LSI HBA card. Not really sure what I was trying to prove buying that platform because it was also my first gaming rig that I built for myself and now it's in pieces. I sort of lost interest in rebuilding it because gaming isn't really a personal priority. I just wanted to cross one off the bucket list.

I find it ironic that after I started to show an interest in AMD builds that Jim developed a renewed interest in Intel. It only goes to show that it never really pays to be a fan boi. The Alienware that I gave to my other other other daughter is Jim's old gaming laptop and it's Intel. The rig I'm working on right now is a high end AMD platform that runs DDR5 RAM and gen5 NVMe. It's a shame we don't have the password to Jim's Mine Craft account because my daughters are very big on Mine Craft and his layout was very extensive. It would have been nice to see his game continue in perpetuity.

Yes. You are definitely hard core when it comes to security. When it comes to personal preference I'd probably air gap everything and be done with it. BUT I have this thing called family and they really like to network a lot so I do what I can. Of course, when stuff happens you can best believe I'm the one in the hot seat. Meh. There's no end.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

To many PC's, that actually sound fun in my world :-) you will not be out of things to do this winter. :-)
I hope you find some of the sleeper PC's in the collection you have :-)
I'm not a fan of Intel or AMD.. i have always run Intel as it has been more stable as office hardware.. While AMD in the past was better on gaming but needed better cooling..
But that was in the past.. as that changed sometimes in the 2010's.. and today AMD is pretty stable and dont run much hotter then Intel.
I stopped using hardware raid a few years ago.. i run ZFS raid nowadays as it is better in many ways.
I looked at LSI cards just a few months back as i need more disks.. But i never got one as my computer budget is zero dollars at the moment :-)
I often build things as i cant afford to buy a ready solutions... or i build things just because i can or want a new challenge in life. :-) But at the moment my projects is all on ice.. even the software projects.. So i have no fun at all for the moment :-)

Okay.. i have only heard the name Mine Craft.. but i have no idea of how it works.. I stopped playing games 2001 or if it was 2002.. So I'm totally out of the loop on games.. My niece is a gamer, so i have a feeling she know what it is. 🤓

I'm not jealous of you to have to keep the network secure and working user-friendly for a whole family :-)
I split my own network in to Vlans, where i can keep different security layers.. IoT devices is isolated from my personal computers, then another where i have EOL devices with no internet access.. and so on and on.. The only thing i air gap is work computers and my retro computers that cant be used for real things, just nostalgia as the hardware is wayyyyy to old for any real usage. :-)

You can get used LSI cards very cheap these days and many of them are barely even used. Check Ebay. You can flash them too if you have any security concerns. But I warn you, once you start using those HBA cards you may never want to go back. They make things soo much easier.

In the UK the fastest FTTP on offer is typically 1Gbps. I went for 150/150 when I got connected. Like you I wanted to keep the costs down. That's more than enough for my needs. My previous copper wire connection was only 50Mbps, and I seemed to get by on that (well, except when downloading Windows ISOs - that was painfully slow!).

I found 250 to be a good compromise as i download a lot of "ISO's" over torrents. 😇 so 250 seems as a sweet spot, when its fast enough to not be frustrated if the "ISO" is 100-300GB in size :-)
I remember.. you posted on 10F about the upgrade to fiber :-) :-) I'm guessing you got a lot more stable internet after that upgrade?

It was actually quite stable before, but it's certainly very stable now. I've just checked my records, I got FTTP 17 months ago. Been completely reliable.
