My top of the line Whirlpool microwave, died this morning.
It was manufactured in 1999 and I bought it in 2000. So it only lasted 22 years. :-)
It's probably fixable, but I don't have a multi-meter or soldering iron, so I just bought a new one.

It's some hole in the wall company called Insignia. But it just has to last about 8 months or less.
I'm gonna call around see what these things cost to repair. Or I'll buy another Whirlpool in July 2023.

There's really not much in a microwave. Just a fuse (soldered), a big capacitor, a transformer and the magnetron.
The rest is just bells and whistles stuff. I took the cover off to see if it was anything obvious (it wasn't).
But I did find the schematic inside, and that's always a plus. :-)

The hard part was cleaning the counter under the microwave.
I mean it's been sitting there, never moved, for 22 years.

So, all in all, it was an interesting morning. :D

Most of the time it's the capacitor. They cost about $15

Well I just talked to the local appliance repair folks... and explained "how" it died.
It just... stopped. Just like a breaker had tripped.

They said the same thing I thought... probably the fuse.
I have to borrow a multi-meter from a friend to check the fuse.

They solder it in, and wrapped it in paper, so you can just "see" if it's blown.
So if the multi-meter says it's "open" (blown), I'll borrow a soldering iron and replace it.
It's just a 20 amp/250v slow blow fuse, which I can get anywhere.

Ofc, there could be some other problem... like what "caused" the fuse to blow.
But this is an old house (built in 1908), so voltage spikes occur every now and then.

The most expensive part in there is the magnetron which only costs $80, and to get a new microwave of similar specs these days, would cost almost $400. So I figure it's worth trying to fix.

I wonder how many sessions you have to have all told and I hope you had and get no side effects Bree, my next infusion is in 2 weeks, but that has very few issues associated with it and I have always been fine afterwards so fingers crossed for you

It's six, at three week intervals, half way through now. They told me that before the start. All done and dusted in time for socialising at Christmas.

After that it's monitoring my PSA levels with regular blood tests, they're dropping nicely at present. If/when they rise it's time for another chemo course. Hopeful won't need one for a very long time......

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

That's the plan, as normal as possible for as long as possible ;) There may be some radiotherapy later to really keep it at bay, but so far the chemo seems to be doing it all on its own (and still no side effect except for the hair stopping growing)... :thumbsup:

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    In-place upgrade to 24H2 using hybrid 23H2/24H2 install media.
    Upgraded to 25H2 by Enablement Package.

    Also running Insider Dev, and Canary builds and Windows 10 as native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
