That report is from 8.0. I don't have 8.1 yet, and I'm happy about that, given the problems involved.

Funny thing is my full backups take less than three minutes with my new vme drive now with v8.

The only tool I found that was much faster was use of native Winfows FFU command!

There is one bug though that everyone with 8.1 appears to suffer including me. If you have CBT installed then you cannot use 'safe eject' for a usb HDD, it always says the drive is in use. Disabling CBT for the external drive is not enough, unistalling CBT is the only workaround for that, or shutting down before you unplug the HDD of course.

I quit using/installing CBT years ago.
It gave me too many problems. If it wasn't one computer with a CBT issue, it'd be another one.
I worked with Macrium support on CBT issues for a long time, but I ended up deciding that it wasn't worth it.
The problems outweighed the benefits for me.

You only have to look at the Reflect changelogs over the past few years, and you'll see CBT appearing consistently.

CBT is a Premium (paid for) feature, but it is an option that you can de-select when installing Reflect Home. CBT can help make backups quicker, but it is not a necessary component. CBT is not included in Reflect Free. Stigg can use Reflect Home without CBT by custom installing it and not including CBT.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

Over the years, I've tested many backup programs. I guess you could say I'm a backup enthusiast. For me, it's the most important application on my computers.

In recent years, I have settled with three backup programs that run on a schedule on all my computers.
All three are extremely reliable. In fact, I can't remember having any failed restores.

The three backup applications are:
Macrium Reflect (Home & Server) I own a Home 4-pack. The Server licence was given to me by Macrium for being a beta tester. I don't install CBT or Image Guardian.
TeraByte Image For Windows (A very reliable and powerful backup application. It has a steeper learning curve, but well worth the time spent learning about it and it's additional features)
Drive Snapshot (A very tiny and reliable standalone backup application).

Thanks for the response! I've also used Terabyte Image for Windows and I agree it's a powerful and reliable backup program.

Macrium Reflect Changed Block Tracker (MRCBT) reduces the amount of time it takes to perform incremental and differential images by monitoring the changes to an NTFS formatted volume in real-time. This is especially relevant when a file system contains very large files, such as virtual hard disk (VHD) files, where speed improvements are significant and can reduce the Incremental image time from hours to minutes or even seconds.

It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

It only affects incremental and differential backups and it's designed to make them faster by tracking changes.

Thanks for the replies, I checked and I have CBT installed, but rarely do anything but a full backup, as it only takes around 6 minutes.

There has been discussion about CBT being the culprit on the MR forum. We haven't been able to come to a conclusion.

Yes, it was pulled shortly after release due to a few people having issues, in particular not being able to boot up after the install......

It's not that clear, I got it on one of my machines before it was pulled. I have CBT installed and didn't have the issues.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. Just butting-in on another MR related issue: - In the image shown in post #234 Macrium state that the latest version is 8.0.7175 but does this only apply to the paid-for version? I have the free version and that is 8.0.7279 [UEFI] which was installed via Macrium's 'Check for updates' sometime recently. Is this another pulled release? It seems to be working okay in creating Diff images so I assume it is okay to leave it installed?
