And you will be even more in love after you have done your first restore and discovered how easy it is. Then with any hiccup you just restore to the last backup, or if you deleted some files a while ago and find you need them... then just mount an old backup and pull them off.

I've not had any issues. I've made a backup successfully (image and verify). It was a little faster with v8.1 than the same backup with v8.0.
(SSD system drive, USB HDD destination drive).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

I've also switched over to MR v8.1 -- but find the speed increase varies greatly with the hardware being used.

In the case of NVMe drives, I get an AMAZING improvement! Backups previously reaching 2.1Gb/sec and taking three minutes, now reach nearly 7Gb/sec and take under a minute. I used to walk away during the backups but now sit there, being awed by the speed!

The 2.5" SSDs are somewhat slower taking about half the previous time.

The HDDs are no faster at all -- so rather than use up limited MR 8.1 licenses, I switched the PCs using HDDs over to MR 8.0 Free version.

I just used the backup file verification in Reflect 8.1 today for the first time. Compared to V8 .0 and earlier it is blindingly fast (on nvme). More Kudos to Macrium. Their backup performance was one place where they needed improvement.

Incremental backup, set for 10AM every day, keep 2 incremental backups. It used to make .mrimg files in order of 1-3GB depending on changes but last 2 were and it took over 15 minutes to complete while previous smaller ones took barely 30 seconds.

Reflect has ability to merge incrementals with full to create a synthetic full. Is that what yiu wanted - maybe default has changed - check advanced settings to turn it off?

Don't know what that 87GB is for but may think of reason for other happening,I changed to keep 2 instead of 3 incrementals so it may consolidated the two.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

With Macrium it's usually best to wait until you get a notification "Updates available" and then do it. Macrium is usually a totally reliable program although for total Disk cloning I go for the Linux DD command as I don't have to worry about any partitioning, file system, efi / mbr issues or "ownership" of file issues. For OS backup and image browsing Free macrium is usually 100% safe and reliable.

Of course DD takes longer and will also copy bad data as it's a purely physical thing sector by sector copy including unfilled spaces but it always works under any condition. However for 99.9999% of people on this board Macrium is just about perfect for backup / restore tasks.

As for archiving large amounts of data then that's another story -- different strategies needed there -- e.g if you have say 4TB of music etc most of that doesn't change and you only need to backup the changed data -- but you still need to archive the whole lot somewhere prefereably on a NAS.

If you DO update Macrium then check after you take a backup with the new version / update that the RESTORE works -- how many people even bother to regularly check that restores work after normal backups !!! sometimes they can fail for all sorts of reasons e.g I/O error on the medium etc -- even though the backup reported no errors.

Well, I did update thru notification and they pulled update soon after, that happened at least twice. Luckily It didn't affect me as much as some others.
