Solved Latest Macrium Reflect 8 updates


Booting from my Ventoy-stick has never been like an F-16, just takes about the same time as the boot from HDD.

Bug fixes and Improvements v8.1.7400 - 2nd March 2023
  • Disk Images
    • We've improved the speed of Incremental and Differential images for source disks with a 4K sector size.
    • Inc/Diff image size could be larger than expected after a system reboot when CBT was disabled. This has been resolved.
    • Some customers have reported that the 'Ignore Bad Sectors' option failed to suppress CRC error code 23. This has been resolved.
  • Scheduled Tasks
    • This release fixes a problem that caused a deadlock between scheduled backups in some configurations.
  • viBoot
    • Image Backup of a VM could fail when the base image used to create the VM contained multiple disks. This has been resolved.
  • General
    • Occasionally, Restore menu -> 'Browse for an image' caused a program exception. This has been resolved.
    • We've optimized the size of some UI elements for 800x600 screen resolution in the Windows PE rescue media.
    • The Rescue Media 'Devices With No Drivers' dialog is now displayed fully localized.
    • We've fixed a problem where malformed driver .inf files could cause ReDeploy to crash.

Where did you hear about that one?

This looks like another case of the release notes being prepared in advance of the patch being officially released, and the notes then got leaked, as happened for v8.1.7387 (which you also asked about before its release, as I recall).

That one initially had a release note dated 19th February 2023 but when the patch was released the date in the release note had changed to 21st February. If that's the case I'd expect a new patch in a couple of days.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

Spotted by @cereberus who posted over on TF....
That's the release notes for an internal test, not a public release. The server has been scanned by making up URLs and someone got 'lucky',. It's now been removed.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Has anyone tested v8.1.7401 yet?

Bug Fixes and Improvements v8.1.7401 - 3rd March 2023
  • Disk Images
    • We've improved the speed of Incremental and Differential images for source disks with a 4K sector size.
    • Inc/Diff image size could be larger than expected after a system reboot when CBT was disabled. This has been resolved.
    • Some customers have reported that the 'Ignore Bad Sectors' option failed to suppress CRC error code 23. This has been resolved.
  • Scheduled Tasks
    • This release fixes a problem that caused a deadlock between scheduled backups in some configurations.
  • viBoot
    • Image Backup of a VM could fail when the base image used to create the VM contained multiple disks. This has been resolved.
  • General
    • Occasionally, Restore menu -> 'Browse for an image' caused a program exception. This has been resolved.
    • We've optimized the size of some UI elements for 800x600 screen resolution in the Windows PE rescue media.
    • The Rescue Media 'Devices With No Drivers' dialog is now displayed fully localized.
    • We've fixed a problem where malformed driver .inf files could cause ReDeploy to crash.
  • Various
    • Various other minor fixes and changes to improve Macrium Reflect.

Folks, what do you all consider normal update frequency?

Me? Monthly updates. I imagine a routine, scheduled monthly board meeting to update a flagship product, with the occasional 'emergency' update therebetween.

The recent flurry of updates feels funny to me.

To me, "normal" update frequency for SW other than OS would be as soon as a bug was discovered and fixed or there was some new feature proven to work and adds to value, that would be welcome at any time, why wait for some major version change ?

I don't see fixing bugs as an "Incident", bug is an incident, not fixing it. Another thing is "new and improved" features, those only when proven to work properly but if so why not ?

Normally, product development (software, hardware, anything) works on a schedule. An occasional item outside the schedule maybe OK, but too many items outside the schedule is NOK.

The issue is how many unscheduled items is too many?

Internal reviews at the 'code monkey' level maybe done on a weekly basis (on a Friday afternoon LOL) > that gets tied in to higher level reviews on maybe a monthly basis > then prioritization what gets implemented in the next monthly product update release.

The above is IMHO an example of good management of the product development process. The flurry of updates that I see recently is not that.

We had a major update - we always get this but it settles down.

What is really important to recognise is none of these bugs affect the final image file.

Equally, most of these bugs rarely affect most users.

It is maybe a bit more important to test restores, and have a back alternative plan but no need to "panic".

Well, I hope so, but if it was all so benign, why the recent flurry of updates?

May be the practical take away is to not update for now, until things settle down? Of course, that's assuming that you have no problems with the version you have.

I myself don't have any problems, but watching people/MR hopping around makes me wonder why they do that, I don't want to find myself hopping around too :eek1:

Other backup companies such as Acronis make you wait until the next planned update for any fixes. Paramount chose to fix problems as they are found. I know which I prefer.

Me 3, if anything is wrong fix it and give it to us as soon as possible, that goes for all SW and firmware, cars and toasters.
