Stable version of Edge (118) seems anything but stable, continual access violation errors, breakpoint errors, no extensions installed. Uninstalled repaired, reset, nothing helps. Seems a total mess

Same here. Seems to only be on my windows 11 machines, not on any windows 10 ones. Problem started with an Edge update a few days ago for me, but on the public/stable release 118, not the developer version 120. Not sure if it was that version of Edge or installing KB 5031455, which I did at more-or-less the same time. On closing Edge, 16-19 active processes in taskmanager remain active, in spite of start-up boost, continue running background processes etc all being firmly disabled. I have disabled msedge.exe from my startup apps (which was set to enabled after these updates on my windows 11 machines only), but the only way to get rid of lingering Edge processes is to manually end tasks or by running C-Cleaner (which requests to close down Edge Chromium on running). It was these C-Cleaner prompts that alerted me to the problem.

There are some reports of this new behaviour on reddit and on microsoft answers. A few (mine included) on Wilders too.

I find Edge MAY properly close if it's only been open a few seconds & ONLY to the home page, not actually used to browse anywhere. If I browse, then close it, it never fully closes - still shows after several hours. In addition to having startup boost & continue running background processes disabled, I also have efficiency mode & pre-rendering disabled. I don't sync anything, & don't use co-pilot or the sidebar. Have tried enabling then disabling settings to see if that helps, also disabling extensions one by one. Doesn't seem to make a difference. I also delete all history, cookies, cache etc on closing (is set to do this automatically, but even doing it manually makes no difference).

Edge remains disabled on reboot (once disabled in start up in Taskmanager), but if Edge is then opened, used, then closed - it'll stay in the task manager as per below until killed forcefully by ending tasks or courtesy of allowing C-Cleaner.

MS has turned this setting back on after updates for me in the past too, but not in this case. Mine is off & remains off, just the setting isn't being respected. Check your taskmanager again after using Edge for a bit & see if the problem stays away.

I noticed something on both the Edge Stable and Canary is that in the following screen, it will show "Your browser is managed by your organization" on the edge://settings/help page when this is a standalone personal computer at home that is not connected to any windows network.

I just looked at the Edge Stable on Windows Canary running under Hyper-V on the same machine and it doesn't have browser managed by organization:
