Still bugs me why Explorer, Task Manager, etc. can have normal Close buttons, but, Office just has to have these big fat b*st*rds!!! 🤷‍♂️

I just tried a few suggestions but it wouldn't remove the pic.
Signing out didn't make any difference as the pic was gone but not the excess space. I believe it's an allocated block regardless if the profile image is displayed or not.

Someone else may have better luck

It's the Microsoft.Office.UXPlatform.FluentSVRefresh which you can no longer disable.
The MouseFriendly/TouchFriendly thing doesn't make any difference..., the Best Appearance/Best Compatibility thing doesn't make any difference...,
It's just a big fat space regardless of what there!!!

This is simply due to poor software engineering beloved of Microsoft. Another issue is tiny fonts only visible to eagle eyed software engineers under 25.

Without being an insider, when I do an update check from File->Office Account I get the latest Insider Current Preview, for example Version 2602 (Build 19725.20078). These updates would be great if they actually fixed anything - such as the event 300 Failed to parse element: VersionOverrides DisplayName=Microsoft Forms which continues to be the majority of Error level events being logged.
