I respectfully disagree. The better way is a weekly full image followed by daily differential or incremental images. These can be done while you work on something else. They take just a few minutes. How often do you clone your disk(s)

If you clone a disk, how can you be certain that you are not copying some corrupted sectors which have not caused any problem but might bite tomorrow? Do you always run SFC and chkdsk before cloning?

The 'best' way to anything should always be open to review and change!

I clone my disc on average of once a year. If something goes completely gonzo I will re-clone once it is fixed. File history is able to bring all my personal files back up to date in most cases. If not there is always my archives which pretty much amounts to a backup of my personal files. Almost always I can access a drive for my personal files even when the OS is completely gone to pot. As long as the drive is functional I'll be able to access my personal files so I really lose nothing in that regard. In addition to this my archives are in RAID 1 so even if one drive craters I still have an identical copy of the data.

The corrupted sectors argument is moot. When you make a backup how can you be certain you're not backing up corrupt data which may not be causing any problem currently but could bite you in your backup? Yes, I run SFC and a thorough VS on my drive before I clone it. This really doesn't take long with silicon drives.

Of course, as I stated previously, I also back up my OS. Sometimes the backup works, sometimes it doesn't. When serious stuff happens (see video) my backup is useless. I can only say that I'm glad I had a clone handy and that my personal files had already been archived. To be fair, SAFE MODE, via BIOS did result in an eventual bootable "rescue" nonetheless the roll back took me back considerably and I had to update my personal files. Snap Shots are fine if you're a Linux user but Linux also has it's problems. File History is pretty much the answer to incremental images but again, it is unwise to depend on this alone as File History is so easily corrupted.

So far no one has expressed any recognition of what I shared in that video. I was hoping someone would be able to explain to me what was going on there.

Try running Ubuntu off a USB stick. If it opens ok, your hardware is ok. I suspect a faulty bios.

Oh the problem is resolved, the thread is marked solved (after I finally got it to behave) but it took a little wrangling to get it to work. The BIOS worked fine before the upate. Two days prior I ran SFC due to a false alarm when my eternal drive was disconnected and failed to show. There was no corrupt data at that point on any of the drives. My overclocking worked. My RAM was fine. It was all systems go. AA/OC on the queue code and the system was stable. Then I did this update. Admittedly, there was a BIOS update to be had but this was not done until after the fact. I'm not blaming the BIOS because this didn't happen until after the update. The BIOS upgrade may or may not even have been needed — at least not for Win 10. My guess is that it was needed in order to upgrade to Win 11 and Win 11 wasn't even on the PC.

A faulty BIOS, the result of 4 spinners on a black screen? My, my. And to think this unit came with TPM2 built in. I shudder to think what might have happened if I plugged in a module to bypass the TPM built into the system. Okay, it's a good a guess as any but I do know that the system ran stable until that update. My thinking is going more along the lines of this code being written to make my PC more Windows 11 compliant (seeing that it already passed the Win 11 ready test) as last year's failed upgrade only resulted in a catastrophic system failure. Until now I never bothered to try to upgrade again because of it but I have learned since that others also had very similar issues on the X570 platform when upgrading to Win 11.

Now this is not to say that attempting to upgrade to Win11 from Win 10 on an X570 platform will result in having four spinners on a black background. I'm hardly suggesting this. I consistently rejected the Windows nagware and clicked the 'don't remind me' for what it's worth. I'm thinking the only way I'm going to get Windows 11 to work on this unit is with a fresh install. Once again I'm glad I have a nice, fresh, cloned copy of my Windows 10 so that I can dual boot later to a tried and tested OS that actually functions — at least when it isn't messed up by yet again another half-baked Windows screw-u-update.

Why not simplify your life and try Macrium Reflect? It's the most popular with forum members.

To be fair, that is a consideration. That said I already have half a dozen software programs offering all sorts of backup options so I'm not all that inclined to jump on the band wagon. Frankly, I don't completely trust any backup software hence my reason for using more than one method of backing up my data. For personal files I also use Kaspersky, which, to the best of my knowledge has never failed me for data retrieval.

The old 'don't put all your eggs in one basket' adage has worked well for me over these last couple of decades. Sadly, Kaspersky isn't exactly cheap and they want another 200 bux I simply don't have. I'm on a fixed income, retired technically, but not technically retired. So, I will have to find more creative ways of rescuing my data.

I'm going out on a limb here and guess by the drama content in this thread your system backup methods are not actually working otherwise you wouldn't of had to reinstall lol

So yeah hopefully you've learn how to use them via clone or system imaging and winPE or winRE recovery flash media to restore or simple swap drives old school method.

He had better luck restoring a system image

A user here had issues restoring a system image recently with reflect but seems to have sorted the issue out.

Which is why I started using idrive, after much deliberation and some great help on here from @AK6DN . I'm more relaxed now I have that, as well as external images and soon will have a full back up on a spare computer as well. I like that it fires up daily at a time I have opted for when the computer is always on, takes just a few minutes and no effect on system resources. And know all my files are somewhere else. I've had too many external drives fail in the last few years. Plus they get expensive to replace. I like the clone idea too.

Typical El Niño spring weather... In like a lamb and out like a lion. We already have over two doz. wildfires to deal with. Looking forward to April showers. Old man winter isn't going to go anywhere without a fight first.
