Lenovo Yoga with new SSD, Clean Win11 install is SLOOOOOOW!!

First Diagnose the SSD as stated in Post #11.
If the Drive tests any less than GOOD it needs to be replaced.
If the drive tests GOOD, than download the PNY Toolbox Firmware Updater in Post #19.

How did you install Windows to the drive? Was there an OS previously on the drive?
If so, did you do a Clean Install of Windows 11?
If the drive is brand new out of the box, than it is very unlikely that the format was Bad.

Follow the suggestions in Post #11
and download the PNY SSD Toolbox and Firmware updater
I've downloaded the PNY tool and it doesn't report anything nor will it complete a firmware upgrade. Clicking on any button causes the app to freeze.

So, what I did today was to wipe the SSD clean, so there were no partitions at the beginning of the clean installation of Win11.

It took over an hour, and here's the timeline with notes when things appeared during the install:
starting the install booting from the USB drive with Win11 25h2 install media on it - We're getting a few things ready

New doesn't mean it doesn't have a mfg defect. Give how the main thing that could be wrong is the SSD I still think that's the issue.

Buy a new nvme and see if the issue goes away. Then you can warranty/return the other one. You can also test on the old ssd you had.

But this time get a 3rd gen not 5th gen. Maybe your old one cannot work with the higher speed. Supposed to be backwards compatible but maybe something wonky there.

That's a good point, @andrew129260. The CPU is eighth-gen, which means PCIe 3. So 5th gen storage is kind of a waste. It may also get hot in a laptop not designed to cool it.

The way you have done the upgrade may have something to do with it, a so-called "clean install" and losing some Lenovo system drivers in the process.

There were loads of them via Windows updates on mine almost always labelled as "Lenovo - System - #######"
No idea what they are related to, the version numbers clearly referred to at least 2 different components.
Some were related to the SSD, I forget exactly as they have disappeared from the Update History prior to Jan 2025.
They were never in the Lenovo drivers page.

The Micron Storage Executive states that the SSD has Lenovo OEM firmware. Just stating facts on mine, no idea of the significance for your model.

It maybe worthwhile to look thru Lenovo user groups as almost always someone else will already have tried an SSD upgrade. Maybe contact Lenovo.

A 5th gen SSD is way over the top, as I suspect the interface is Gen 3. They are supposedly backwards compatible.

Maybe Imaging the old drive and restoring to the new is a better method ?

Thanks, Yeah I think running on the speed its rated for could be good step. I meant gen 3 not 4 in previous post.

It's usually really good running at backwards compatible mode but its possible the model doesn't like it. OEM machines can be more picky.

Some like these:

Crucial 1 TB Gen 3 NVME

Samsung 1TB Gen 3 NVME

It's also possible as someone mentioned you need to apply all the lenovo advantage update software for their specific updates. Might be a driver update for the storage controller that plays nicer with the higher speeds. But I would just get the speed the unit was designed for.

I'd be curious how the Drive is connected? What is the Bios setting in regards to ACHI vs RAID or needing IRST drivers? Also at this point I'd also be curious how Clean installing Win10 would fare compared to the Clean install of Win11.

The Samsung NVMe PM9C1a 1024GB SSD does not use a Phison NAND controller. Instead, it uses Samsung's in-house developed Piccolo (S4LY022) 6-Core 4 Channel Controller. The PM9C1a utilizes a controller built using Samsung's 5-nanometer process and seventh-generation V-NAND technology. 🤔

From Dell: 512GB NVME Solid State Drive accelerated by 32GB Intel Optane Memory are the fastest as compared to NAND SSDs. Intel Optane H10 with SSD offers speedy storage and accelerates opening your programs.
I'm wondering about a drive compatibility issue. Is the fact that it is a gen 5 in a gen 3 slot not playing well together, or is it something with the firmware or the way the drive is manufactured? Also, may it be a heat issue with a drive like that getting too hot in a housing not made to cool it? It might also be that this certain SSD will never play well with the system, no matter what is done. Ive heard of rather rare and weird issues like that as well.

ah as someone who always uses AMD I usually forget about that with Intel always using raid drivers by default for some reason. I still don't understand why that is always set as the default on so many machines.

Technically, depending on how the system is implemented, the installer shouldn't even see the boot drive during the install process "IF" an IRST driver is needed. But I'm not sure that applies to "ALL" hardware configurations.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
After I wiped the original SSD clean, the 1st clean Win 11 install was very slow. That's why I purchased a new SSD, but got the same results.

I will look for yet a different SSD that I might have sitting around and try that, and I'll report back. I expect the same, SLOOOW install and further performance.

And, YES, the Lenovo drivers are gone when the install of Windows occurs using MS' Media Creation Tool to create a generic Windows 11 bootable installation USB drive. I have done countless clean installs of Windows and, aside from the IRST driver, the actual installation on an SSD takes about 5 minutes, longer if it's an older and slower SSD. After such an install, and before the proper drivers (chipset, SATA, etc) drivers are updated or added, the computer will certainly NOT be running anywhere near its expected performance speeds. I know that and expect that.

But not only does this laptop continue to run slowly after all the Lenovo and appropriate drivers are applied, the install of Windows itself takes over an hour, by my last attempt. So I do think the problem is somewhere else than the SSD.

Could be the onboard storage controller is failing then. Honestly, I think that machine if your having issues might be worth looking into a newer unit. You could get a nice refurbished unit for probably around the cost of a really nice nvme drive.

8 gb of ram for a win 11 installation is the "bare a--e"minimum.
This was the reason for suggesting Post 6.
Try a minimum installation. If nothing else is achieved it could prove ram quantity, not quality,is the cause.
im using win 11 on my potato laptop with 6gb ddr3 ram. The usage not above 3 gb on idle. The installation process was very fast same for the opening apps he mentioned.
