If I understand the situation correctly there is or was a Windows 10 installation that works on the laptop? If so, have you attempted an upgrade install to Windows 11 from within Windows 10?

I think that's the issue. He started upgrading and didn't complete successfully due to some incompatibility. He can try disabling devices not needed to upgrade either in BIOS or Device Manager before upgrading. These are second disk, sound, Bluetooth, network, card reader etc. I would also disable any third-party antivirus, antimalware and firewall so it doesn't interfere with the upgrade process. I would disable all startup applications and even some non-Microsoft services. He can enable them afterwards. I forgot to say that he must also disable or uninstall any customization software such as Open Shell, StartIsBack, Explorer Patcher etc

Then do a complete disk scan to mark the affected area and avoid using it. Then try again to upgrade.
A quick look back over the thread doesn't mention any issues detected with "chkdsk".

Old school hack: move the disk to another computer, upgrade to Windows 11 and then put it back. Yes, I have done it back in Windows XP era.
