LibreOffice

The Pool Man,
Sorry. I did miss your offer to send you one of the spreadsheets I'm having problems with. I do have another PC with Win 10 on it. I'll try that suggestion. Since this only happens about 25% of the time, it is hard to recreate the error.
You mentioned that it might be a corrupt file, it might be the template I am using. I'll try a new template.
Thanks.

Thank you. I'm doing the Spock thing. If you can't find out what's wrong find out wasn't isn't wrong.

I can recommend the Affinity publisher as an alternative to MS Publisher, and Serif seem to have a permanent sale on - It can drop down to around $25 one off price - They also have a clone of Illustrator and Photoshop for around the same price - and those are not subscriptions but buy and own ...

Is Affinity Publisher better than Microsoft Publisher?
Reviewers felt that Affinity Publisher meets the needs of their business better than Microsoft Publisher. When comparing quality of ongoing product support, reviewers felt that Affinity Publisher is the preferred option.
I also have Serif's PagePlus that works fine, one of these days I'll get its replacement Affinity.

One additional thought ...

Is the file saved as an xls file, a spreadsheet, or as an xlt file a template
As the files behaviour does match that of a template with the blank opening and only save as.

Xls and xlt are two excel formats if you are using the application specific options these may be different but still behave the same

(I remember TSO !!! etc) -- BTW if you are bonkers to try you can run IBM's old MVS/SP mainframe system with JES2/JES3 on a lowly laptop these days using the Hercules Emulator and using the current update to the old well established MVS "turnkey project" !!!!!) Works surprisingly fast !!!!! both on Windows and Linux. Don't remind me though of IBM's horrendous JCL (Job Control Language) though !,

A much better (IMO) Free office clone than LibreOffice and is pretty identical to Ms office for 99% of normal users -- there's no Visual basic in the Free version so some complex excel Macros won't work but pretty well all other functions look and feel more like Ms office than anything else --note though no email client - is WPS Office.

The one requirement I've had to deal with is older clients that used the included [by OEMs] Microsoft Works to create/record recipes and Works 9.x was the last, LibreOffice can still work with those files. And it is included in most Linux builds and is cross-platform.

I'm going to be 71 on my next birthday and I'm STILL using TSO, JCL, etc. (z/OS 2.3). I should retire but the job isn't making me too crazy so I'll stick with it for another year. I'm what they used to call a "systems programmer" but since we were outsourced to IBM, those of us who remained behind are now "mainframe architects". And yes, I'm bonkers and I've puttered around with Turnkey MVS in the past.

I will have to check out WPS Office. Part of me wants to subscribe to Office 365 but the other part of me doesn't want to make Microsoft any richer.

Hello. I have an update.

I think I am back on track with LibreOffice on Windows 11. (knock on wood)

I copied a calc template. That's what I was trying to work with for this project.
There was definitely something wrong. I thought maybe it was LibreOffice causing the problem. Or maybe Windows 11. I finally got around to verifying the formulas in the template. Guess what? There were a few errors with the formula. Fixed them and everything is OK now. That's a relief.

The other thing. I discovered I am having to click on the "save" icon several times to save it back to the correct folder.
Thanks to everyone for all the help.

Winjer. I believe you're doing something wrong somehow. That you're not catching and so you can't report it to us. Because I can

-- create and save a test.ods file to my desktop
-- reopen it and use it as a 'template' by saving as and dropping a new test2.ods file to my desktop
-- I can then open test2.ods, edit it, and save it by clicking once without worrying about the 'correct' folder

Can you tell me if YOU can do exactly what I just said? Don't use one of your other files. Follow those precise directions.

The Pool Man,

I believe you misunderstood me. Or I don't understand you?
I solved the problem. The template I downloaded off the web was corrupt.
In this case, I didn't make a file to save as a template (which I have done so many times before).

The template I was trying to use I downloaded off the web and found that it is corrupt. I have been using spreadsheets since 2001. No problems until now.

It was just ironic that I started this project shortly after installing Windows 11.
And yes, I have always done exactly the way you described above. The only difference is that this time, I am not saving it to my desktop, I am saving it in a folder in "Documents".

Thanks again for some clues to solve this.

1. You said, "I discovered I am having to click on the "save" icon several times to save it back to the correct folder." That's a problem, yes?

2. Maybe you said it earlier but in the update you just offered you made no mention that you downloaded the template from the web.

But I'm happy you're back to smooth sailing. take care
