Solved Link or share Windows 10 with Windows 11 on a one disk dual boot system?

Hello everyone,

I have a dual boot system with one SSD split in two partitions. On one partition I have Windows 10 and on the other I have Windows 11. I have been using OneNote on Windows 11 quite a bit lately (mainly for record keeping). However, I wonder if there is a way I can share OneNote records between the Windows 10 boot with the Windows 11 boot? Also, I have Office 2019 on Windows 10 and Office 2021 on Windows 11.

Is it possible to share between the two boot partitions? Please be aware that I do not use nor like OneDrive and have deleted it from both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

If your OneNote files were saved to a second drive both OS's could access them.

Indeed, that's true. Thanks, Scott! I didn't realize that OneNote 2019 can access OneNote 2021 files. Excellent!

Already a long time (since Windows XP) I have the habit partitioning the main drive of a (new) system in such a way, that I have a separate partition for the data. In my system that drive is called Documents and its letter is D:.

In that way it always is possible to make images of only the system partition and when restored, no data will be touched.

When a few weeks ago I made a dualboot system, one with 23H2 and on the other with 24H2 version of Windows 11 Pro, in order to test 24H2, I had no problems at all sharing data files between the two systems.

You will have to direct document locations (Documents, Photos, Music etc.) to the separate partition.
I know that there must be some tutorial in this forum how to do that, but could not find it right away, did not get the right search string...
This is what I wrote about that in my notes (originally in Dutch, translated by Google):
Moving is done as follows:
- Right click on the folder in question, click properties
- Location tab (if no location tab, then this is not a system folder), fill in the new location.
- Move the location without moving the content (unless you want to move the content to the new location).

So a separate (second) drive is not even necessary! A separate partition on your main drive, where you store those or all data, will do.

Edit: Added "click properties" to the description for moving. Did that because after 11 hours I saw that was missing.

I'm sure you have a backup plan for your D partition in case of drive failure.

All my system folders reside on a second drive that 2 OS's can access. They all get backed up to a third drive.

Yes I sure do.
I daily backup all modified and added files on that partition to a NAS. Besides that I have backups I make weekly on two external USB-HDDs. where I do mirroring to one drive the one week and to the other drive the other week.

And I have a daily (restricted) backup to a cloud server, which allows me 5 GByte max. To that server I only backup those files, that have been changed since the last full backup of all data files on a USB stick, that is stored in a safe place outside my house (to be more precise: y son, living in another town).

And I make backups in the same ways of all installation files and all installation notes, which are located on yet another partition.

So I think I have indeed done a lot to avoid data loss, but still you never know, Murphy's law...

But it seems to me, that backing up your data files is not only important if you have the data on a different partition from the system partition. If you have your data files on the system partition, backing up is equally important!

BTW. All daily backing up is done fully automatically.
