W11 pro beta
One of my W11 pc's is likely to be used at the museum I am a volunteer at as our present one used by the volunteers is showing signs of failing. The one I would use has already got W11 on it, but a clean install from an ISO seems a good idea. It was built from new parts and started with W10 PRO 64 which was activated using its product key, and later upgraded to W11 PRO using an ISO from Microsoft, and my Microsoft account, as I got bored waiting for the automatic update to materialise.
I would clean install W11 but I'm not sure whether using a local account with the product key for W10 would work, or do everything via my Microsoft account which certainly would. Which method should I use?

Why not just use "reset my pc". It will activate automatically even if you choose local account.

I got a new Notebook back in Oct. with Win10 Pro, got it setup as a Local Account Administrator and activated then it was able to get Win11, no problem. There are tips on how to bypass the Microsoft Account on a number for forums but my reading shows the Home version may not be able to do it and that the Pro version may not be able to do it in the future.

Your PC has a digital licence for Pro stored on the Microsoft activation servers and linked to the hardware ID of the PC. This digital licence means you can clean install Pro, skipping entering a key if asked, and it will activate from the existing digital licence. You could install W10 Pro or W11 Pro, the digital licence does not distinguish between 10 or 11, nor do the keys. These days Microsoft refer to them all as being for 'Windows 10/11'.

Linking your digital licence to your MS account is an optional extra, you do not need to use you MS account to ensure activation. All my PCs, 10 or 11, Home or Pro, just use a local account.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.
A reason for my being unsure is because the computer will be used by many people and I was worried about any of my personal information leaking out. Most people do not have to worry about this.

@tinmar49 As suggested, do a "Reset this PC" from settings and install 11 Pro (without a key) and it will activate. If it were me I'd make sure it was a local account and not associated with my Microsoft Account if others are using it. If you think you must use your MA, create a second local account for everyone to use without giving them access to your main login.

I actually did a bit of both, accidently, I logged on to my Microsoft account during the installation, (I have an extremely secure password) and later on the option appeared to change to a local account, after getting to desktop.

You can still clean install Windows 11 and set up using either a local account or Microsoft account during Windows Setup.
