lock desktop icons in place

HI,
I forgot how to make my desktop icons stay put. I think I have set to remain in place, but every now and then a couple get switched around arbitrarily, it seems. I have windows 11 now.

You haven't got 'Auto arrange icons' ticked have you?
Right-click anywhere on a blank area of the desktop and you should see the context menu as shown here: -

Thanks. I found the options. I can't remember what it was set at. I'm new to 11 and the menu selection wasn't readily apparent, but I selected the one that wasn't on, and all the icons lined up to the left, I think, in alphabetical order. Now the setting is at align icons to the grid, as you suggested. I put the icons back where i want them. (I have way too many.) While I was sorting, I noticed a few of them got switched after I'd positioned them, while I was arranging the others. I was moving things off the desktop and into other folders. Before, From time to time, when I added or deleted something, this inexplicable switch occurred. So may be something I just have to deal with. It's not too dramatic, but several do get rearranged and I just put them back.

Take a look at Stardock Fences. I use it, it works for me. Not everyone likes to pay though.
