Yeah... enabled or disabled made no difference to the restore times (40% slower), via the Rescue Media.

Interesting, my 8.0 is doing a backup as we speak and I'm trying to decide what to install for 8.1 or just throw in everything. I remember there was a big to do last time they tried to release this build and it got recalled.

Wow. My backup time (66GB) went down from 5 minutes to 1 minute! This is from m.2 to m.2. Good job Macrium - and about time!

Hope there are no bugs :D

EDIT: By the way, that 1 minute is with encryption and standard compression

Create a virtual hard drive, restore image to it, and create a boot entry to test it has restored ok.

None of these are essential to base operation, although a CBT bug could affect things.

I tend to avoid CBT as it does not save a lot, and was rather flakey in its early days, and I have never bothered since.

I strongly recommend Macrium Image Guardian - it prevents hackers deleting/tampering with image backups. If you get issues you can just turn it off.

Also Viboot is a separate program (also in free version). It allows you to run images as a virtual machine in Virtualbox (V7 now) and Hyper-V (if a Pro user). I test image backups with this to check image backup is sound. There is no harm installing it - you do not have to use it.

Whether this benefits depends on drive speeds, CPU speed etc. My tests always found Medium was a good optimum but it may differ for you

Having said that, I am going to try it out of interest now you mention it.

I just restored back to version 8.0.6635
My restore from backup via Rescue Media is back down to 1:55 - 2:00

While it's nice to be able to make fast backups from within Windows... I don't want to have to pay for that when I'm doing restores from the Rescue Media. I think I'll wait till they get it... fixed.

So, with high compression I get about 700-800 MB/s and it takes 1:34 minutes. Still way better than 5 minutes. But the image size is negligibly smaller. This is because I have all of my data on another disk so this is mostly all OS.

My time went up from 1:50 to 2:45 for virtually no change (21GB backup to 20 GB backup).

Just to be silly, I turned off compression altogether and boom - mega fast (I have nvme drives) and it took 1 minute but file size was 34 GB.

So as always Medium still looks best though as a balance between speed and disk space.

Depends on what your backing up. OS is already pretty much compressed.

Did you have Rapid Delta Restore off in 8.1?

Also, how often do you restore compare with backups? I probably only restore 1 in 10 or thereabouts?

Edit: Just read your Macrium Forum post - I really see no reason not to use RDR. I and most others paid users here use it all the time.

The worst case is you have to repeat the restore with it switched off as the backup is unaffected.

Still, in the end it is your choice.

My base OS is around 40 GB inc temporary files so I get quite a good compression with medium.

Yeah... I don't use RDR. When I do... it only takes about 22 seconds to restore from within the Rescue Media.
I don't really trust that.

Can one of you guys please checkout speed difference with WinPE?

I cannot see an obvious reason unless WinPE only uses 1 core or maybe a drive issue?

Hi,
Recovery winpe runs off a flash drive and the os is dormant so of course it's going to be slower.
Point really is to get the os possible interruption/ conflicts out of the equation that's why even a 2-3 year old winpe recovery media still works on newest windows updates Myself having 3-4 machines one offline is no big deal :wink:

If you have a file that has been corrupted it may not restore it (depending on how it got corrupted). For instance, I tune my memory which can result in a silent corruption, so I don't use it. Another example would be some bad driver scribbling on the disk.
