Any comments about the end of updates for Macrium Reflect Free (v8)? I saw a comment in an old thread that support ended in 2022 but updates were continuing. Now even those updates are ending. It appears that the latest version is a subscription (I hate this marketing method). So how secure will I be sticking with the free version with no support and no updates?

A second question: most references I have seen for downloading Macrium Reflect v8 reference v8.0.7783. There is a download from CNET for v8.1.7847. Is this legitimate? And is it worth downloading and installing?

Looked at the website it states 8.1.8325 was released October 22, 2024 and 8.0.7783 on October 28, 2025. There's a list of older versions at the bottom of the page. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two versions? Those release dates don't make logical sense.

Macrium Reflect Free v8.0 has been retired. The last update for Reflect Free was v8.0.7783 - 1st December 2023. Reflect Free still works in the latest Insider Canary builds (26H1), see:

Reflect v8.1.7847 is not Reflect Free, that was retired at v8.0. It will be the 30-day trial version of Reflect v8.1. Reflect v8.1 expires to a 'restore only' version at the end of the trial.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

It was a sad day indeed when they no longer offered their free version. I knew all along that one day that it would come to an end, as it is such a nice software program. I still use the free version, but I'm thinking that once the new Boot Certificates get updated next year it may not work for me anymore. :(

Once your PC has the new certificates, it should just be a matter of rebuilding the WinRE rescue media. If it still can't boot, then simply turn off secure boot temporarily when you want to boot from the rescue media.

You can simply copy over a new boot file without recreating the USB drive. They make it sound scary, because Macrium is taking the boot files from either ADK or WinRE sources. But the new boot files are already bundled in up-to-date Windows, so it's just a matter of copying one file over.

There's nothing wrong with recreating the USB, but you can save yourself the hassle...

There is that option to add Macrium to the Boot Menu, I wonder if it would work that way. I have never set it up that way before because you need to pick Windows or Macrium at each start up, (I think??) and I did not want to do that every day.

Copy new boot file to USB drive on H:

There's only two possible boot files, so you have a 50/50 chance of getting it wrong. If you're restoring to another PC, where you're not sure what the Secure Boot settings are, you can try one of the two files to see which one works.

The second problem is be aware of when you took a backup. Because if the backup is older than UEFI migration, the image you backed up will have the old boot file and might not boot after the restore process (because it's the same file as before). In that case, you need to temporarily disable Secure Boot, then boot into your restored Windows and fix the boot file separately.

Some folks might be keeping a backup from like over a year ago or something not very recent.
