Solved Make Win 11 Pro USB SSD Bootable

I have an SSD from an old tower PC mounted in external USB-C enclosure that I would like to boot on my new laptop. When I try to boot from it I get an error screen that it needs to be repaired. Obviously drivers are an issue but if I can get it to boot I assume Windows will update drivers. I did fix boot problems with Macrium Reflect but it didn't help.

Anything I can do? or is it a lost cause. I have some old recording software (no longer available) that I would like to run.

There could be many reasons Windows 11 not booting it could be device drivers but which ones how can we know if you want you can uninstall third-party drivers from Recovery Environment, but that is long process and could be not the boot problem i suggest you have a look at Startup Repair log file after running Startup Repair.

The log file created by Startup Repair can help to find out the cause of the boot problem. In this video, i will explain how to use the Startup Repair tool to troubleshoot boot problems in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type the below command into Command Prompt and press the Enter key.

The following command scans integrity of all protected Windows system files and repairs files with problems when possible.




Please replace partition letter C: with Windows installed partition letter. When the computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment, the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assigned any other drive letter, usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit | find "osdevice" command can be used to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition, the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

Something happened the drive is totally corrupted. I have a Macrium full disc image and going to do a restore, tomorrow.

Anything I should do after or during restore?

after you have retored the image, you might need to add the portable os registry key that whatsisname was on about. He could be right, he is not wrong about eveything.

as it will be offline you would need to load the system hive and manually enter it

What OS? As the thread title, Win11 Pro. (working OK and current with OS updates).

Did you know that Macrium Reflect includes viBoot that can boot a Macrium image as a virtual machine? Your specs say that your Dell Inspiron is running Windows 11 Home, but that's OK. Starting with Reflect v8.1 viBoot now supports using VirtualBox in addition to Hyper-V.

Is it possible to use internal SSD/HDD/NVME ssd which has clean installed Windows 10 /Windows 11, as external os device , on different machines, with the aid of external case /enclosure and usb cables to attach to C or A ports of pc?

I haven't abandoned this. Working on another project this week.

To troubleshoot Windows 10 or Windows 11 boot problem, just follow the instructions in this guide, and hopefully you will fix the not booting problem in no time.

quite a supply of recovery partitions you have accumulated. what is the 103mb thing

This is an upgraded disc. It started as Win 8, then upgraded to 8.1 then 10 and finally 11.

I think you probabaly dont need the things in red unless ther is a special reason for the 103 mb D partition

Probably don't need those partitions but not the reason it won't boot.

or system restore to point before that last update
