Making a bootable USB drive for Windows

I cannot find my old bootable USB drive so I need to create a new one. I seem to remember that in case of any problem booting up Windows then my Bootable USB drive was able to get me back to my PC home screen.

So, can anyone tell me what is the simplest way of creating a new bootable USB drive (I have looked at a few YouTube videos but they seem to suggest that they are for completely re-installing Windows.) All I want is a USB drive that will get me back into my PC Windows so I can sort out any problems that might have caused the trouble. Even if you could give me any link that points to a simple methods of creating an emergency drive

I am running Win 11 Version 23H2 Build 22631.5909

I believe you are referring to what used to be called Windows to Go. That was a feature in earlier versions of Windows that has been removed.
Some 3rd party tools tout ability to create a WTG usb but I have never used them.
Look into Rufus and OS to USB.

Rufus still has it in the latest release, but I’ve never tried it either.

You can't go wrong with the simple Media Creation Tool.

Of course, having a good backup image of your system and a bootable recovery disk is also a pretty good idea.

Use win2usb by Hasleo - it is free for W11 Home but paid version for Pro. However, if you use the home version on a PC that has been activated with Pro, you can upgrade the usb wtg drive to Pro by entering the generic Pro key.

I've used several...

My main go-to is Ventoy, because it can handle multiple ISOs on a single USB drive and it can also use Folders so all my Tools are in one folder and all my Windows ISO are in another, as well as a separate folder for my Linux ISOs.

If you just want a clean and easy way to make the latest Windows ISO, you can't go wrong with the Media Creation Tool (Windows 10 [be advised that W10 is at EOF so very limited support/updates going forward] and Windows 11).

Another good tool for creating a Windows 10/11 only bootable USB is Rufus. I've used it before to remove the requirements for not only TPM and Secure Boot, but to bypass the need to use a Microsoft Account (it may be the easiest way going forward to do so using W11 25H2).

If you're feeling adventurous, you can always use your own Unattended File (works on both 10 and 11) to streamline the installation process. It works better with MCT and Rufus as the ISO is already expanded onto the USB while Ventoy keeps the ISO files as a single file that is read on use.

Hi good people - I followed the advice and used the Media Creation Tool to make a bootable USB. When it was finished I checked the resulting USB and everything seemed to be on the USB. However, when I booted up I was expecting some sort of intermediate screen but it booted up straight to my normal Windows desktop screen. Is that what is supposed to happen (and yes, my PC boot order is set to read USB first).

So, is this new USB working as it should or should I be seeing a different screen on booting up ???

You have to modify BIOS to give USB flash drive higher boot priority so it boots from it when present rather than from the hard disk. Or you can press F12 while booting (confirm with User Guide) to see the boot menu and select the USB just once without modifying the boot order permanently.

Usually if you press escape repeatedly when you switch on, it will bring up a menu and from that you can select things like bios or boot devices. Select boot devices and select your usb stick. It then seems as if it's going to reinstall windows, but opt for the small "repair" word bottom left and it'll take you to the troubleshooting menu. Do NOT go as far as letting it reinstall Windows or it will wipe your drive!

Not.

You aren't booting from the USB drive.

If using Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 ISO, you see the new Setup interface which gives you the choice to either install Windows or repair an existing Windows installation. Even if you accidentally start installation there is a screen warning you your disk will be wiped and gives you the choice to quit the new Setup and load the old Setup interface. The familiar old Setup after choosing language and keyboard layout gives you the choice to install Windows or repair.

What is it you're wanting to check? If it boots to your desktop ok? Also Windows 11 23H2 stops being supported very soon - are you thinking of upgrading?

Following all attempts today I have made supposedly bootable USBs using both Aomei Backupper and also Macrium Reflect. All the folders and files appear on the USBs that are created but these also boot straight into my Windows desktop screen. Could there be something wrong in my Windows 11 settings?? As I have said my BIOS boot order is set to boot from USB so its not that....... unless they are meant to go direct to Windows screen?

You probably need to turn off "fast start" in Windows which could be bypassing things - that can happen. Control panel - power options - choose what the start button does - click "change settings that are unavailable." then untick " Turn on fast start" then "Save changes". If that doesn't do it, then the bios might be ignoring that for some reason. Then you could try the thing of hitting escape repeatedly, selecting the boot menu and selecting the usb stick. Works for me every time (almost). If it still won't boot from the usb stick you might need to turn off secure boot in bios, for it to boot. But that isn't usually necessary if it's a Windows usb. It'll be fast start that needs turning off.

See my previous post. You have to bypass the normal boot order and manually select the USB, or change the boot order in BIOS permanently.

Well, as a last resort, following your advice I have just made a bootable USB using Rufus together with the Windows ISO file. I have just restarted PC and, yet again, it goes straight to my Windows desktop startup screen. Should there not be a window appear from the newly created Windows USB that gives me some options or is it meant to go straight into my PC ?? I'm fast running out of options......
