Manually force a program to open in the background?

This is specifically for Adobe Acrobat, but I figure that a way to force it for ~any~ program could come in handy for future cases.

I do research and like Acrobat's ability to restore documents from previous session automatically, not unlike having a browser restore closed tabs. However, unlike a browser, Adobe *forces* itself to be focused every time each document is loaded, drawing over other programs and interrupting typing tasks. It would do wonders for me if I can figure out a way to force it to open and load documents in the background. Almost any approach is fair game.

well i found the reg keys to open it maximized but have yet to find how to force it minimized. i can write an ahk and compile it to exe and you can set that as the 'default program' to open your pdf files with... where is the installed exe for your adobe located? the path to the actual program's exe

btw, if you want this:
make adobe alwasy open maximized:
HKCU\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobt\DC\ExitSection
bLastExitNormal = 1

HKCU\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\DC\SDI
bMaximizeNextDocument = 1
bNullDocMaximized = 1

Instead of forcing Acrobat (and others later on) to the back, you could set whatever program you're working in to always be the topmost window.

Thanks. I think I can achieve similar behaviour using PowerToys' Always on Top utility, but I still prefer being able to force specific apps to be in the back if possible.

oh yeah... your post reminded me of an older app that would work too... for any program

Hmm.. rbtray seems to work for applications that are already launched, which doesn't address the behaviour I mentioned for Acrobat, sadly.
I tried changing the two registries values bMaximizeNextDocument and bNullDocMaximized to 0, but that does not seem to change anything. :\

Launch acrobat, set rbtray for it then see what happens…

Does this work for you ?

This looks promising. If I can get it working and also force Acrobat to not maximize itself whenever it opens a new document I might be able to achieve the desired behaviour. Will look into testing it out.

I tried this program on my desktop PC. It did not work. I asked ChatGPT. It told me to use triple quotes around path to executable and this worked. If path includes spaces, triple quotes is needed.

This does not work:

Dim WShell
Set WShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WShell.Run "C:\Program Files\MPC-BE\mpc-be64.exe" ,0
Set WShell = Nothing

This works:

Dim WShell
Set WShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WShell.Run """C:\Program Files\MPC-BE\mpc-be64.exe""" ,0
Set WShell = Nothing

Name the program something.vbs and run it wscript \path\something.vbs

When run, you do not see it on TaskBar, but it appears in Task Manager.

0 is hidden.

mpc-be.exe is Media Player Classic Black Edition.

Hope this helps.

I don't have the program appear on TaskBar but in Task manager.

Just launch a new window CTRL + N, launch Acrobat and go back to your original window ALT + TAB.
