Many things not working properly...

Ok. I am now looking at the software. I take it that the ones you mentioned are what I annexed. Only one seems to be free for a one-time use

The Acronis you mentioned is the one on the left, correct?

and the Macrium is the the Workstation trial also on the left? . Will this one that appears to be free, do what I need?

So, I assume that the cloned image will be superimposed on what is there alrewady. How, is that done? The Macrium (or the other) will delete everything before copying it back? or just overwrite the OS?

Longer ago I had an external HDD that had a double cable like the one on the photo in #33.
The drive needed both connectors to be plugged in, because the USB connection could not deliver enough power for the drive (USB2.0 is limited to 500mA).
Modern USB3.x outlets have more power and so it might be enough to plug in just one connector, but I don't know for sure if the USB3.x outlet on the computer regulates its max. power according to the connected cable/device. If it does, you would still need both cables to be plugged in!

It will overwrite everything on the partition it is directed to. And will bring it in exactly the same situation as when you took the image of that partition.

I looked it up and the second USB plug is for power. You only need it if the USB port being used doesn't supply enough power to run the drive.

The only thing I know for sure is that if the drive is working OK you don't need the extra power.

Yes you can use it and if you want to be sure you have a working image you can make an image on both drives. I edited my previous post # 31 and added the link to the free version of Macrium on Major Geeks if you want to try it.

Yes, download the trial version and there should be an option to create a Rescue DVD or USB. Create one and boot your computer from it. It's all you need, you can uninstall the main application.

I managed to download and install Acronis

Now, back to the external drives: they have loads of folders that I backed up ages ago. Do I have to delete them? I would prefer to keep them, The drives have enough space for the cloning

I am just worries at what I read that says that sometime in the process of copying (ie the cloning, things may go wrong...

In that case instead of the cloning tool you do a backup (save to files) of your disk. This saves a full disk image in one or more file in the target partition without deleting the other data on the disk. You can later restore your full disk from these files using the restore function. Using Acronis from Windows will tell you that you have to restart to do it because it cannot be done while the disk is in use. Booting from the Rescue USB can backup/restore or clone your disk even if Windows is damaged and don't work. Also you won't have to install Acronis again after you get your disk back, just to restore your data. You boot from the Rescue USB and start the process right away.

Yes, that's they way to do it. You can choose to create a DVD (if you still have a drive in your system) or a USB.

Thank you but with so many queries on my past we are losing the reason for the cloning

When I got Eleven I was infested with Edge, OneDrive that took me weeks to try to eliminate or find ways round it. Besides, I have Programs which are difficult to install (Office 2003, Thunderbird emails, and others)

The advantage of cloning, as I understand it now, is that when the image is restored the laptop will be exactly as when I sent it for repair, where they reinstalled the Windows Eleven and I have to start all over again

Now, the two external drives that I have: I can transfer all the data of one to the other. Then, I would ask you if I have to format the drive.

Or, what I thought, I could create a partition (never done that) and use it for the cloning

You can keep the folders. Just make a new folder for the image. When you do the restore, just point the program to the image.

As I said, if you choose backup you can save the respective files on a disk with adequate space without affecting the data it already has. In fact you can backup more than one disks in the same target, space permitting. The only disadvantage of the backup is that you have to restore the data to a disk before you can use them. If you have a spare disk that you can clone to instead of taking a backup of the source, you can swap it and boot directly to your old system. That's why I prefer cloning.

Tip: You can connect the clone to another computer and use your system while the original computer is away for repair. Windows and Office might ask for activation but you can use them some days without activating. This is enough until you get the original computer back.
