Solved McAfee pop ups, the reason ..

some people have been getting McAfee AV pop ups which have been causing concern
and these pop ups have been difficult to stop and remove, the reason being
on LG monitors they are adverts placed there by LG for McAfee.

Saw this a few days ago. It just makes you shake your head at what some companies will do to try and drum up business and what other companies will do for a pay out.

The problem isn't really at those company's.. the problem is Microsoft that lets third party software install silently in the background without any kind of user interaction.
AV and other programs have always in the past tried to install extra software when you install there software.
But now its Microsoft doing it... So LG isn't really to blame more then its ugly done.. MS is the real bad guy for even letting it install without user interaction.

i will cut and paste this from another post i did yesterday, as it fitts better in this thread then the other thread.

But LG smart TV's was even worse.. but the jury is still out if even LG monitors is sending back user-data

just to add LG have stopped the McAfee ad, but
the delivery software for the ad is still there and active.

Preposterous. You have to have unattended software installs if you want your OS to be used in any large business. I'm not hiring an army of technicians to walk around to thousands of devices and hit Next a few times.

LG is the one to blame in this one. They're the ones in control of what their app does.

OEM's can submit their own driver updates for inclusion when WU checks for new drivers.

MS has to put some trust in the vendors not to do stupid things, and can pull problematic updates if there are complaints. The fact that Pavan has spoken indicates LG crossed that line, and they "got the message".

If a vendor wants to bundle crapware in a driver installer provided on the vendor's own support site, MS has no say in the vendor's business. But if you submit it for WU distribution, then you can't do that.

i would never want software to be installed on business computers without IT-departments say-so.
Just look at the newly example with microsoft silent install of LG software that also installed ads. I wonder if a Bank want that popping up on their computers while handling hundreds of customers bank transactions.
With a supply chain attack you can make it install malware or spyware instead of just McAfee ads.

MS seem to come out of this OK as they put a stop to LG. MS are not perfect but they are not to blame for this one.
but the very fact that a company as large as LG would even consider software to install ad's unbeknown to the user changes the whole ball park it was is or what isnt safe software from companies that people place their trust in, LG have just create a whole new ball game, who does anybody trust.

my answer is nobody...
since 10-12ish years back i go by the principle zero-trust for almost everything in life.. Exceptions is always what make the rule.. but 99% is zero trust in my life. (bad life experiences have a bad habit of make you lose trust in everything)

New software and i do research first, then i run real-time monitoring to see if it acts unwanted.. I never have auto-updates as i want to read what the update do before i considering installing it, as it might not even apply to my setup.
And as this thread is about LG and mcAfee popup.. i do install drivers for hardware, but i rarely install the software that is offered with the hardware unless i know i really-really need that software.

Okay so now you’re okay with installing software automatically, under certain conditions. Hard to debate a topic if the person changes their stance every post.

LG aren't the only naughty tech OEM's doing this. Intel and ASUS aren't innocent either with their install and uninstall processes in their software.
