media player problem

i've been using the new windows media player. my "shuffle and play" button isn't working. when i press it, nothing happens. i've gone in to settings/apps and tried to repair, doesn't help. when i do reset, shuffle works briefly, but then stops working again. i've uninstalled and reinstalled, it works briefly then stops working. wondering if anybody has any suggestions. maybe there is a file somewhere on my computer that is corrupted?

Open the Command Prompt with administrative privileges and execute the following commands one at a time.

not sure what you mean one at a time for the first line. i did.....

dism
/online

but got error message.

Enter the first command line and let it run to completion

Then enter the second command line and -ditto-

didn't work

1. search 'command'
2. in search results click 'command prompt app'
3. select 'run as administrator'
4. in command window type Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth NOTE THE SPACES
5. when it completes type Sfc /scannow NOTE THE SPACES

i did, that did not fix my media player issue.

Sorry. I thought you were having problems running the commands when you said "It didn't work." Are you running an insider version of windows or release? If insider, hopefully someone running same version will step in.

I am on release and I tested shuffle and play which does work for me. I'm curious about something. Is your music collection on your computer or in the cloud? Another user has a problem when using shuffle photos as his screensaver and his photos are on onedrive. If your music collection is in the cloud, try making a test folder on your computer, put a few songs in it, and see if shuffle and play then works. If it does, that will rule out it being a media player problem.

I noticed this when I opened Media player directly from all apps. It looks like there are custom settings if media library is not in its default location of "Music"

i'm not using the old media player. i'm using the new one. my music is on my computer.

You could try this. Click the shuffle button, below, near the play button to the left. Double left click the song you want to start with and see if it shuffles now.

What Version is it?

I was reading this article about the new media player. The way I see it you have to first add all your locations to the playlist. Is that what you did? Also make sure the new media player is set as the default app to handle music files.

Is that right @Edwin. You're an audiophile (and an app fiddler) so I know you've already messed around with it.

No. The Shuffle and play button should work from any list.

What Version/Build of Windows are you on?
Did you get a Media Player update?
