Microsoft Azure Linux

We know this is a Windows site but Microsoft has released its first general purpose Linux distro - open source and built on Fedora:


Never thought this day would come. A milestone that's finally here.

Not a milestone, in any sense, really, WSL has been running various Linux for a long time.





So nothing to see here.

You want a proper Linux experience, install a fully fledged distro, on bare metal.
RDP or ssh into it from Windows, you have the best of both worlds.

You can install a desktop environment. Most likely GNOME because its the default on Red Hat and Fedora.

"Highly stripped down and minimalist" package support, tells you, this is not worth bothering with.

As mentioned previously, Linux on bare metal, on same network, and accessible from Windows box, is having a most unreasonably large slice of cake, brought to your table, and eating it, with extra cream.

Azure Linux (or "Mariner") is a server-oriented Linux distro designed to be run on Azure-based cloud instances. MS allows you to run whatever you want under Azure, but provides Mariner as a pre-built option if you don't want to do the work of repackaging your Linux for a cloud install.

Mariner-based servers also power some of Azure's network infrastructure. But it's definitely not intended for desktop use, unless you want to spend time adding packages to it. It's like picking Windows Server to run, and then griping it doesn't have all of the consumer desktop features.
