I have both Edge and Chrome pinned to my taskbar in Windows 11.

When I open Chrome, it opens a nice new window to the side in the taskbar:

However, when I open Edge, it does this:

edge.webp

The icon disappears since it turns into and Edge window.

Is there a way to get Microsoft Edge to mimic Google Chrome and just open a new window on the right hand side every time I click it (leaving the Edge icon to the side)? Obviously in previous version of Windows, Quick Launch would resolve this but Microsoft removed Quick Launch for Windows 11..

Weird, for me, only Firefox Portable opens on the side but the full version opens in the icon itself.

I just opened Chrome and Edge side by side and this is how they look:

pretty sure its tied to the profile being different than the one pinned to the taskbar. after looking at OPs pic again, it says -Profile 1, which is not the Default profile

"Microsoft Edge is managed by your organization". Chrome is not. Could this have something to do with it?

its probably a GPO enforced by your company. i never recommend attempting to change anything on company PCs as you'll wind up violating some terms of use in some fashion...

So for others (such as yourself) does it open a new window to the right or does it open inside itself like it does for me? I am unclear if my computer is the issue or if this is "by design" for Windows 11.

if its the same profile that is pinned to the taskbar, it opens on top of the pinned icon, like your chrome.
if your workplace has a specified profile being force pushed to use by default that could be what it is

If anyone is curious, I figured out a way to fix this:

Right click on desktop and click new shortcut
Type C:\Windows\explorer.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" (ENTIRE THING INCLUDING QUOTATION MARKS)
Right click the new icon on the Desktop and pin it to the taskbar

You can then change the icon to "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe"

After you do this, Edge will open a separate window in the taskbar, rather than opening inside of the icon you clicked on. Same can be done with Chrome.
