Microsoft wants to update Windows 11 using Hot patching without a restart

  • Microsoft is testing a new update method for Windows 11 that will allow the OS to install critical updates without requiring a reboot.
  • This method, called "hot patching," has been in use on Windows Server and Xbox for some time.
  • Hot patching for Windows 11 is expected to debut with version 24H2 later this year.
If there's one thing Windows users hate about Windows, it's Windows updates interrupting your workflow or gaming session with a popup asking you to restart your PC finish installing the latest security update. It happens at least once a month, because that's how often Microsoft rolls out security updates to Windows PCs.

This may soon be a thing of the past, as the company is now testing an update method called "hot patching" for Windows 11 PCs. Hot patching is already in use on some Windows Server editions, as well as Xbox, and now it appears the company is preparing to bring it to devices running Windows 11.

It's not even an issue really. Finish your game session/work meeting/whatever, then restart.
Windows won't ever auto-restart without user interaction if it's set up properly.

I would rather restart anyway to ensure a 'clean' environment after patching.

    Acer will not allow WD Black SN8100 to function in m.2 slot 0 and Crucial T710 ssd's to function in either slot.
Microsoft have been going to do this before in the past. I will believe it when I see it. ;-)

I hope not and hope if they do, the user will be given a option to choose. Personally, I prefer WU to update system files while offline. It just makes more sense to me as it's one other way that can prevent any corruption from happening.

I like it and I don't want to have to restart my PC to get it updated.

This will be useful in the corporate market, where companies can't afford downtime.

Its about time hotpatching was the default Windows update method.

I always reboot after Driver Update or Windows updates, and typically i grab them manually soon as released anyhow as i keep track of Windows Patch Tuesday and Optional Patch Tuesdays, and grab them immediately.

Plus check Windows Update a few times other days just to see if there is anything i need to grab, and get system fully up to date.

((I'm a bit obessed with updates, and typically excited if its a known update day, and waiting til 10am pacific to install immediately) for Optional updates i check once in morning, mid afternoon and evening.

*Do the Same for 3rd Party Applications & MS Office 365 typically check a few times a day*

For me the reboot, is the way.


On a side note: Without the reboot, we'll never know we're being updated, till it's too late.

Once this idiotic plan of Microsoft's, takes off... the new theme song for ElevenForum will have to be...

I work for the Navy and our pc's are forced to restart after any system or security updates.

Corruption of files? Nope. Hotpatching patches in-memory code of running processes, not files.

Why all the negativity?

Most of the comments are basically just "fear of the unknown".

Sure, there may be teething problems (make regular image backups) but this is the way to go - hardly new on Linux.

Reading between the lines with this new feature is
The update downloaded and installed without any notice.
Scheduling around that type of process would be difficult not to mention ignoring basic metered connection principles

Just the updates system running all the time triggered by startup means it takes bandwidth and again is the opposite of metered and the Manual option to update checking in the first place.
So is not negativity mister head in the sand it's a bad thing period.

And you're basing that on what? Because that's not how it works on Azure VMs today, where this patching method debuted (for Windows anyway).

It's not about change. It's about caution. We spend a lot of time maintaining our systems and it's wanting to know what's going on so we can prepare for it. If something breaks, and it's on MS, we want to know what broke it. With silent updates, we won't. Everyone keeps talking about Linux updates. Well, Windows setups aren't as forgiving as Linux when it comes to updates so to me that's comparing bananas to oranges.. Even Apple, who almost never makes a mistake or has a bad load, lets us schedule them and they're done before iOS loads. To my way of thinking, its MS taking even more control out of the users hands. I don't know why I'm surprised. It's MS.

That's the only part that I'm concerned about. Someone's computer could all of a sudden start acting up and the user won't have any idea of what is causing it. I guess I'd be more OK with it if MS sent a notification that an update is going to be installed first.
