Monitor Refresh Rate vs. Connection Type Question

Last Fall, I purchased a cheap 100Hz QHD monitor to get me by until I build a new system next year (old 60Hz FHD monitor was failing after 7+ years). I had it connected via HDMI and it ran fine at first at 100Hz...but started randomly going to "sleep" even when Power setting was different. I did a lot of troubleshooting...different cable, reinstalled video card drivers, and even investigated whether an adjacent USB hub might be causing interference. I then tried putting the monitor at 60Hz and it seemed to work. I ended up just buying/trying a DP cable and it has been fine again at 100Hz.

What are the current limits of HDMI (2.0/2.1) for resolution and refresh rate for monitors...not TVs. Admittedly, while I know the HDMI cables I tried were rated for up to 8K, I suspect the port(s) on the monitor may not have been. For the future...is DisplayPort recommended over HDMI for high resolution and refresh rate monitors?

Thanks...that is what I thought. It should've worked. Maybe because it is a cheap monitor I guess. I assume they are probably HDMI 2.0 ports and 100Hz was "too close" to 119Hz and wasn't achieving full performance. For now, I'll plan to stick to HDMI on my home entertainment devices and DP on my PCs. Granted HDMI 2.2 looks like a significant upgrade.

There can be hardware GPU (PCIe) and software limitations: BIOS, chipset and GPU driver version.
Your GPU seems to support HDMI 2.0 only and no more drivers, so a better cable will not help.
