More Win 11 sleep issues...

I have an Omen 30L as well and my PC also has sleep issues. If I put it to sleep manually, it will stay in a mode where it cannot be woken with the power button and must be forced shutdown. Sometimes it will happen immediately after sleep, sometimes it will take a couple of hours. Often the GeForce lights and Hyper-X lights will stay on. Other times it will be completely shut down and pressing the power button will turn it on (my PS4 did not turn off, so I doubt the power went off in my house).

The past couple of days I have been forgetting to put it to sleep manually (set to 1 hour auto-sleep) and I didn't have the issue until yesterday when I did. According to powercfg, S3 is enabled.

When I pull up the blue screen report in BlueScreenView it reports DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE with ntoskrnl.exe+415b00. Ran the verifier tool and kept producing BSODs with various drivers.

I installed some AMD Chipset drivers from AMD's website that perhaps will help. It did not have any issues last night after putting it to sleep manually.

Might be worth mentioning, I often will put it to sleep and wake it up using a shortcut on my Apple devices with the app Wolow that has a companion app for Windows that is needed to put to sleep (or sends the magic packet to wake up). I even have the shortcut send a command over SSH to put it to sleep if I am using my Mac or running over VPN, or have the Mac run a command line tool to WoL.

When I first got the PC last summer, I have tried enabling lower levels of WoL in BIOS to wake from shutdown but even when I had Windows 10 this would immediately lead to a BSOD when I attempted to use it so I turned that off.

I just noticed that F.12 rev A is available on HP Support. Wonder if that would change it?

I installed some AMD Chipset drivers from AMD's website that perhaps will help.
Otherwise OK, but does not help to understand how system should work out of the box or with standard drivers.
I made yesterday (after many tests) complete return to factory image with BIOS F.12A and only S0 was available after recovery.

Maybe S3 has been available earlier in previous BIOS versions.
It seems that latest BIOS has changed it.
Or maybe there is different power save combinations available because of multiple HW options.
As I wrote earlier, I still suspect that the major reason behind all this mess is the thermal management of the system, which has clearly been a problem with this machine or "product family".
S0 is still very problematic for latest desktop Ryzen and intel processors (which are thermally very different compared to their laptop versions).

It seems that deeper sleeping states (S1-S3) have been available earlier for Omen 30L product range.
After recent BIOS updates HP has apparently decided to roll back permanently to S0.
There must have been more or less issues (which erictbar and many others have described) behind this decision.
Forced transition to S0 sleep mode does not make any sense to me with modern power-hungry desktop processors.
Only thing happening are endless sleep-cool-sleep sequences which are a clear indication of problems.
There is absolutely no possibility to run modern desktop processors in "alive but idle" mode for extended periods without external cooling.
If one of you knows better, please share your thoughts!

So I just bought 2 30Ls with Ryzen 7/ rtx 3070 and my wifes has rebooted 19 times in 7 days while in sleep mode. Mine is better at 8 times. Its always code 41.

Could this be related?

I updated to F.12 yesterday (after 2 failed attempts, this time updated while starting diagnostic tool from boot) and still am getting S3 sleep. Maybe they added modern standby for PCs that came with Windows 11? Mine came with Windows 10. I also tried re-enabling S4 and S5 WoL from boot and am now able to turn on the computer on from shutdown over LAN without a blue screen. Haven't had any issues with the few times I put it in sleep mode, but too soon to tell.

Not sure about the error 41. Appears to occur whenever the when a system reboots automatically, so likely related to these sleep issues.

The WHCP certification requires that, during a Modern Standby session, the total amount of time spent in non-DRIPS by software (SW DRIPS) is kept below 20 percent [of the duration of the Modern Standby session], and also requires that the difference between the software DRIPS percentage and the hardware DRIPS percentage does not exceed 10 percent. (The power saving is called "excellent" if the DRIPS percentage is 98 percent or higher.)

In modern Intel CPUs, Speed Shift is used by the CPU to let it control its own power, dynamically, depending on load.
It tends to get pretty confusing, as the term "TDP" has essentially become meaningless because of it. For example, a mobile Tiger Lake-UP3 with a TDP of only 28 watts can attain short peaks of about 78 watts of power consumption. I suppose a modern desktop CPU these days can have idle power consumption rates of only just a few milli-watts.

Well, hands down. All I have learned so far is the fact that the processor idle power may be minimal in S0 mode, but it seems that in certain models or situations it is still too much for the processor without some kind of cooling during longer sleep periods. Many people (including me) have reported these mysterious starts (fans running with black/idle display) for short periods during S0 sleep. Only thing causing this (according to my opinion) is the heat processor has generated during S0 sleep. If the system is supposed to monitor network traffic and react to certain kind of requests or traffic type, the processor needs to be more or less alive. Latest desktop processors tend to run very hot. My computer CPU runs around 45C when idle with 0.0-0.5% load.
During this running but idle situation AIO liquid cooling and fan is running all the time min. speed. If this external cooling is not available at all, I think these periodic mysterious awakenings are expected. This is a completely different thing with laptop computers which are designed with different approach in mind.

Normally, with a Corsair AIO water cooler or Noctua NH-D15 using low rpm in push-pull, an Intel i7-11700K (no OC) runs in the low 30s when idle, at least if we can assume that the PC case is well ventilated of course. My laptop with an i5-1135G7 runs at ~34 also when idle. But I have to turn off Turbo Boost to keep it from still regularly jumping up due to Windows background processes running, which is both easier and less torture with ThrottleStop [compared to start killing those processes and kill them till they die]. For the most part IMO, this whole problem of "modern desktop CPUs run hot" is a PEBCAK.

Just to conclude this issue on my end, sent the first machine back to HP as their techs could not fix it and they swore it was not a problem anyone had reported - so they sent me a new machine to replace it. Without installing anything, I tested the new machine immediately when it arrived... It had exactly the same problem. So yes, this is an HP machine setup problem and there are probably thousands of these 'gamer' machines out there consuming needless amounts of power when it isn't necessary. Mikjas' analysis above is probably correct.

Sent that one back for a refund as well and ended up having a custom built unit with more or less the same specs and a completely standard Win 11 Pro install. And it behaves perfectly well, sleep mode is no longer a problem. Bye bye HP... Too bad, I really liked the case design and the build quality of the machines.

I reset my PC this weekend (using Windows settings, delete data as well, download from cloud), I checked powercfg again, still have S3 but Hibernate was enabled, which was not before. I disabled hibernate and have not had any issues so far, even after re-configuring everything the same way. My PC started to wake up on its own a couple times in a row one day, but I shut it down and restarted from WoL a couple of hours later when I went to use it and no problems since.

Ah that explains. I also have an Omen 30L desktop and was a bit disappointed that the power consumption in standby was so high.
At the lowest it is 50W (in standby!) which is very high if you ask me, but is sometimes jumps to 100-150W, while doing absolutely nothing.

The problem is that I use my PC the whole day, but during the day there are moments that you leave the PC for an hour or two. A good standby that saves power is a must.

I checked the available power states, and indeed it only supports S0.

That didn't work for me.
I'm going to replace the mainboard for a ASRock X570M PRO4 which seems to support much better standby modes.

I have an OMEN 40L that will crash while in sleep mode. It will not wake up and I am forced to hit the power button until it is off.

I followed this method at Reddit: FIX for HP Omen 30L not turning on after sleep : HPOmen (reddit.com)

I turned OFF "Allow the computer to turn off this device..." under Power Management tab for all my USB controllers found in Device Manager. This was suggested by others for the OMEN 30 (smaller version of my 40L). It has been working well for over 72 hours and wakes up quicker than before.
