This tutorial will show you how to move or restore the default location of the Documents folder for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The Documents folder (shell:personal) is a component of the user profile that is used as a unified location for storing personal data. By default, the Documents folder is a shell folder in the user's profile (%UserProfile%) that is used as a default storage location for saved documents.

If you like, you can move the Documents folder and its content to a location you want it at instead.

If the current Documents folder path is incorrect or is no longer available, you can use the Restore Default option to restore the default path.

Reference:

Contents

  • Option One: Move Location of Documents Folder in Properties
  • Option Two: Restore Default Location of Documents Folder in Properties
  • Option Three: Restore Default Location of Documents Folder using BAT file

Option One

Move Location of Documents Folder in Properties

1 If you turned on back up Documents folder to OneDrive, then you will need to temporarily turn off back up Documents folder to OneDrive until after you moved the Documents folder.

2 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

3 Navigate to the location (ex: "D") you want to move your Documents folder to, and create a new folder named Documents at this location. (see screenshot below)

Move_Documents_folder-1.png

4 Right click on the Documents folder in the navigation pane of File Explorer, and click/tap on Properties. (see screenshot below)

If you don't see the Documents folder in the navigation pane, then type shell:Personal into the address bar of File Explorer, and press Enter to open the Documents folder no matter where it may be located.

You can then right click or press and hold on an empty area in the opened Documents folder, and click/tap on Properties.

5 Click/tap on the Location tab, and click/tap on the Move button. (see screenshot below)

Move_Documents_folder-3.png

6 Navigate to and select the new Documents folder from step 3, and click/tap on Select Folder. (see screenshot below)

Move_Documents_folder-4.png

7 Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

8 Click/tap on Yes to move all the files from the old location to the new location. (see screenshot below)

Option Two

Restore Default Location of Documents Folder in Properties

1 If you turned on back up Documents folder to OneDrive, then you will need to temporarily turn off back up Documents folder to OneDrive until after you restored the default location of the Documents folder.

2 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

3 Right click on the Documents folder in the navigation pane of File Explorer, and click/tap on Properties.

4 Click/tap on the Location tab, and click/tap on the Restore Default button. (see screenshot below)

Restore_Documents_folder-3.png

5 Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

Restore_Documents_folder-4.png

6 If prompted to create a Documents folder at the default location, click/tap on Yes. (see screenshot below)

Restore_Documents_folder-5.png

7 Click/tap on Yes to move all the files from the old location to the default location. (see screenshot below)

Option Three

Restore Default Location of Documents Folder using BAT file

This option can be very useful if Option Two is not available.

This option will not move the contents of the Documents folder from the old location to the default location. You will need to manually move the contents after restoring the default location if wanted.

1 If you turned on back up Documents folder to OneDrive, then you will need to temporarily turn off back up Documents folder to OneDrive until after you restored the default location of the Documents folder.

2 Click/tap on the download button below to download the Restore_default_location_of_Documents_folder.zip file.

(Contents of BAT file for reference)
Code:
@echo off

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

timeout /t 2 /nobreak >nul

if not exist "%UserProfile%\Documents" mkdir "%UserProfile%\Documents"

reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" /v "Personal" /t REG_SZ /d "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents" /f

reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v "{f42ee2d3-909f-4907-8871-4c22fc0bf756}" /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %%USERPROFILE%%"\Documents" /f

reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v "Personal" /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %%USERPROFILE%%"\Documents" /f

attrib +r -s -h "%USERPROFILE%\Documents" /S /D

timeout /t 1 /nobreak >nul

start explorer.exe

3 Save the ZIP file to your desktop.

4 Unblock the ZIP file.

5 Extract the BAT file from the ZIP file.

6 Run the BAT file.

7 You will now see a command prompt open and close to kill the explorer process, run the commands to restore the default location and attributes of the Documents folder, and restart the explorer process.

8 You can now delete the BAT file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

@Brink - very helpful command line!

Case in point: Following installation of Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition in Widows Insider build 22631.1906 the "Documents" folder disappeared from the Quick Start (Home) menu. None of the usual "Pin" methods worked to restore it. The "Clear and Reset" bat file worked immediately. (Bada Bing Bada Boom)

I know this reply is coming a good amount of time since the original post, but I signed up here so I could post a reply and give a HUGE thanks to the original poster. I recently had to purchase a new PC which came with Windows 11 (which I already despise) and of course it came with Onedrive (also despise) I have zero intentions of backing all my stuff up to the cloud, I don't know why any sane person would? Just so access to your own stuff can eventually get blocked behind yet another Microsoft paywall at some point. No friggin thank you!

In the process of installing my graphics editing program (Paintshop Pro 2018 - yes I use an older version because I love it) I realized EVERYTHING I had begun copying over from my current PC (Win 10) was all being placed in a Onedrive folder which also included my documents folder. Needless to say, I was PISSED. So I immediately uninstalled Onedrive from my PC and deleted the recycle bin. I had not ever enabled any backup to the cloud so of course, when I uninstalled the Onedrive and removed all the folders for it, everything I'd begun copying over to the new PC on my desktop went along with it. So I had no way of recovering things.

Luckily I had no real issue with most of the programs I had installed as they went direct to the Program Files directory (THANK THE GODS) But I'd lost a massive amount of (graphics) files I'd begun to transfer over which I always keep. Thankfully they are all still on the current PC that I am transferring things over from and I have them on a flash drive, so moving them back won't be a major issue, just a lot of lost time. Now, we come to the one Program that I literally could not get to work because it was trying to connect to my documents folder (which of course was gone, even though I'd tried recreating a docs folder) for saving settings and brushes, and plugins etc.

All I can say is.. an emphatic THANK YOU for having this post and solution. I had to use option 3 to replace my documents folder and uninstall the damn PSP program then reinstall it and viola everything is working perfectly. I spent hours last night trying to fix the damn thing, and came across this post this evening and within minutes it was fixed. To anyone who is used to being able to move and remove and change their PC folders.. if you did what I did, all I can say is I hope you found this page! Also to Microsoft.. piddle off you and your damn idiotic Onedrive bullshit. Stop trying to control and hijack our computers!

Thank you so very much for this solution post, you saved me major frustrations and headaches. I'm guessing this post gives you many daily good deeds, So one last time, THANK YOU so so much! Hooray for all the smart nerdy geeky fellas today you're my hero!

~Stara

I am echoing Stara's kudos, Brink! THANK YOU! I had inadvertently deleted my Documents folder and proceeded to compound the error by emptying the recycle bin. All is now well. I followed your steps in Option 3 and it worked so quickly I hardly had time to blink.
I appreciate your help SO much!

My problem is somewhat different. Somehow my Documents folder under this PC was named My Documents, Option Two moved all the documents to the Documents folder created in my user, in fact I think My Documents just pointed to the real Documents folder. Now I have an empty My Documents folder in my PC and I can't delete it.

Got it -- Used Winaero Tweaker!

Hello, :alien:

Is your "C:\Users\<username>\Documents" folder restored?

If so, and you're just wanting to add Documents back to the navigation pane in File Explorer, then you can "Pin to Quick access" the Documents folder like below to do so.

Hi, I unistalled one drive and i thought it would be fine since i wasn't logged in then my entire documents folder is hidden. i ran the .BAT file and the default location is fine but now I cant pin it to the quick access panel. Also even if I changed the folder location my documents didn't come up, do ihave to copy and paste them too?

Hello, and welcome to the forum. :alien:

Just to confirm, if you copy and paste shell:personal into the address bar of File Explorer and press Enter to open your Documents folder, do you have a "Pin to Quick access" option in the See more (3 dots) button menu on the toolbar like below?

I do, but it won't let me pin it. I can only pin the old documents folder. Also, sorry to ask again, using the .BAT file do I have to copy and paste the content of the one drive folder into the new one or I screwed something up? (wouldn't surprise me)

Correct. You would need to manually copy/move over anything you wanted from the OneDrive location to the restore Documents folder.

You could try either option in the tutorial below to clear and reset all pinned Quick access folders to restore the default pinned folders which includes the Documents folder. Hopefully, the restored one. You will have to manually "Pin to Quick access" any other folders back though.
