OS
Windows 11 Pro x64
I have noticed a very annoying behavior in Windows 11 Pro x64 on my system. Microsoft Edge opens maximized and automatically imports my Google Chrome data (bookmarks, passwords, etc.) without any warning. A few times Google Chrome has been reset back to default (at least it appears that way as all data is gone). I do not use MS Edge at all. With Telemetry disabled and Copilot removed in Windows 11, this breaks Edge.

Anyone tried removing Microsoft Edge on a production system using Remove-MS-Edge, found on Github?

You can try to disable services and tasks to update MS Edge for example with Autoruns64.
Make sure it's not in the autoloader and don't run it.
Maybe something will be enabled again when Windows updates are downloaded.

Good luck with that. Edge is considered a core component of the operating system. Other components of WIndows depend on it. Rather than uninstalling it, I suggest you disable it's autostart, unpin the taskbar icon, delete any desktop icon, and leave it be. Let it be out of sight, out of mind

Common Microsoft wording on making you believe you cannot do something because they want their dominating software to be used while greatly spying on your activities. Now, even in File Explorer, Microsoft is pulling the number of files, type of files, and extracting XML data back to them for some unknown reason. Probably relating to Recall (or Click To Do) feature.

I've used it on every update, successfully..., hasn't broken anything yet!

This is the type of feedback I am needing. I plan on removing Microsoft Edge using Remove-MS-Edge script and wanting to know if it is good enough for a production system.

The Windows 11 24H2 guest OS in VirtualBox runs good so far, however, I have not had any updates to install, yet, to verify it all works good.

Such scripts usually don't live too long.
True. One reason why I research the scripts to see what it does to remove something. Microsoft will try its best to break the script of removing something from the OS.

I understand. I have been trying to disconnect from Google for a while, but MS Edge pulls much more information from Windows than Google pulls from one's browsing and use of Chrome.

I do use Mozilla Firefox mostly, because I run Fedora Linux (dual boot) too. I have Firefox sync'ing for the dual boot.

Why should anyone need to go in to Microsoft Edge's Settings to disable it when Edge is not used. I understand adjusting the Edge Settings to prevent another automatic import of Chrome settings, but this should not be occurring in the first place. However, Microsoft even breaks these settings as Edge will automatically re-import Chrome settings.

I did find the autorun registry entry for Edge and removed it. Edge no longer, at least for now, automatically opens after restarting Windows. I have this will get set back on the next Edge update. This is why I plan on removing Edge soon.

Update:

Removing MS Edge is only temporary.

I am so fed up right now, that I am so tired of trying too.

Microsoft won this battle.
