MS Edge still running in background, after program closed.

Hi All,

Currently running an up-to-date Windows 11 23H2 install (with Edge version 124.0.2478.80).

I used Firefox as my default browser, but have Edge set up as my PDF reader.

Whenever Edge has been running (to view a .PDF) and then closed, it still appears to have 9 processes running in the background (see Task Manager snapshot below).

I've checked the settings in Edge and everything related to 'running in the background' is disabled.

Is this just another MS 'feature' and something I can't do anything about (aside from manually killing the processes)?

Try this;

~~If you don't want to get notifications or updates for an app when you're not using it, you can set it so it won't run in the background.~~

~~Select Start , then select Settings > Apps > Apps & features.~~
~~Scroll to the desired app, select More options on the right edge of the window, then select Advanced options.~~
~~In the Background apps permissions section, under Let this app run in the background, select Never.~~

Fairly sure this is still relevant in the latest Windows. Not currently at my PC to confirm.
May or may not have to reboot your PC.

Same problem , a few Edge-versions ago.

Thanks for the rep, @TraderGary but I checked when I got back to my PC and this option doesn't seem available anymore.

Generally seems to be about getting the OP to download the batch files or watch the endless youtube videos for views than actually specifically helping people lol, majority of threads and the first response is download this or watch this video.

Most every computer running these days have more than enough recourses, but either way I don’t suppose it matters.

Just a small addendum: I already had the settings @Porthos suggested in #5, but every time I crank up Copilot, I still have to use Task Manager to shut down the nine processes of Edge when I'm finished. Fortunately, my need for Copilot hovers between very little and none. Still, it should be noted that when Copilot launches Edge, Edge doesn't pay any attention to the settings in post #5.

One of these days, I'll probably use @Brink's tutorial to deep six Copilot.

The simplest method that has saved me a lot of hustle is launching the task manager go to the Details pane check for msedge.exe with the largest memory size allocation right-click on it select the End Process Tree then click on End Process Tree option and you are home free.

Also, reading back my earlier comment, I feel i've been particularly harsh, Im not saying the videos hold no value or knowledge, that isn't that case at all, They absolutely do and i appreciate the time etc that goes into these things, Its just a bit heavy on and feels a bit un personal towards the OP on some occasions, Im sure there are plenty of times that it has helped, So on a rare occasion i will apologize for being a bit "heavy". Theres just a time and place thats applicable for em, It just sometimes sounds like a sales pitch to watch a video and bring subs to a youtube channel ( Again, there is plenty of useful info in these videos that isn;t the issue).

And before anyone asks, No i was not made/forced to write this. LOL

None the less i don't want the person taking it personally, I'd say the same for anyone else, Dont want someone to feel that everyone is against them, especially not over something daft like this.
