Ms Edge is still running in background after closing/exiting, although disabled in Start up and removed from Start up with Revo uninstaller,

also within Edge browser settings "Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed" is disabled.

after closing Edge i have to open Task Manager and manually end process. but dont really want to to set any policies otherwise i get the Browser is Managed scenario. any ideas?

This was bugging me as well as I could clearly see that msedge.exe was still running even though all suggested 'turn off' mechanisms were enabled as posted above.

What really did it was to disable the following settings:

Thanks all above for help i had done the first two replies, then signed in ( i dont run a MS synced account < although i have, i sign out )

anyway tried disabling as OAT above done, but OH NO MS Edge still chuggin along behind.

This has only started on last 2 updates ( although may not have noticed the one before )

Very very irritating causes laptop fan ( occasionally to kick in), pissed off because i think overall MS Edge is great.

Just recently tried Slimjet also Chrome based not bad nor is Opera but Edge is the winner

Can i completely uninstall Microsoft EdgeVersion 120.0.2210.7 (Official build) stable app, dev channel (64-bit)

and re-install????

I forgot one more; it works for me in both Canary and release versions.

I have tried everthing everyone has kindly suggested, but no go. Perhaps a new version when it comes may sort it out.

another problem is when i hasve printed to pdf and saved it i cant move it to another location unless closing browser down, i was forever saving to a pdf then moving to say eg my desktop, to read at later date.

but having said all this this is what Canary & early versions are about , overall everthing works 98% of the time with all the updates almost weekly for last few months. Keeps me on my toes, Funny enough my oldish ASUS Mini-itx box with 16ggb ram Intel Core i-5 4th Gen 4600 runs fine all the time, its bullet proof.

I had this same issue with edge being added to startup and running in the background until yesterday. It's no longer in the startup programs and doesn't leave anything running when i close it. I didn't change any settings etc. It just did it by itself. This was also before edge got updated today.

Why is that a problem? The point of it that it forces Edge to listen, otherwise it can change settings at will.

Those entries have been reported to keep Edge running.
Code:
rem 1 - Allow the Search bar at Windows startup
reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Edge" /v "SearchbarIsEnabledOnStartup" /t REG_DWORD /d "0" /f

rem 1 - The Sidebar appears in a fixed position on the Microsoft Windows desktop, and is hidden from the browser application frame
reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Edge" /v "StandaloneHubsSidebarEnabled" /t REG_DWORD /d "0" /f
I had this same issue with edge being added to startup and running in the background until yesterday.
I have noticed this entry in Autoruns, it re-creates itself when removed.
I shut down PC by removing startup entries, so it is not an issue for me.

have tried ALL the above and simply does not close down completely,

i did move the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft folder with EDGE inside, and deleted EDGE Win 11 now lets you delete/remove EDGE,

i download first EDGE 120+++++ Beta then after DEV both not closing either, even with the orig EDGE folder moved ,

i will probably have to clean install the next canary, because updating to next version, wont help.

I think the apps running from the sidebar are the culprit(s). If I quit the apps before closing, there are no left over processes.

I think the apps running from the sidebar are the culprit(s).
MS just uses a fancy name, apps, but they are just shortcuts to webpages opened in Edge.

Yes, since last update msedge.ese actually never exits...and that is why things like 'Clear browsing data on exit' option has not effect.

This is the solution that works for me (besides killing msedge.exe with taskkill):

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
