Hi.

I am buying a new Dell workstation with Windows 11 Pro for Workstation and Dell is asking me to choose from following options to put in factory before shipping out. I am going to use this workstation for my personal use only and not for any business. I am not tech savvy so I just want a clean & simple Win-11 without any Dell junk. I will load all my apps & Antivirus & Anti malware etc. myself.

They are also recommending not to order Win-11 with new 22H2 update because they say it has problems & they are working with Microsoft for that.

Please help. Thank You.

Here is what they sent me in email.

You may choose avail either or all of the below services as part of Pro Deployment offering:

Load a generic/ready Image

Load an Image: WIM; Ghost; ISO; or ImageAssist.

Custom BIOS configuration

BIOS Logo Flash - Please provide us with the logo preferably in black background in BMP format (256 color) with a resolution of 640 x 480 upto 2 mb size.

Asset Label/Tagging – samples below.

Standard Asset Report

Onsite Installation

Once the scope is confirmed, we will set-up the project in TechDirect for your review and submission.

Testing period:
7 business days for project set-up and testing at factory as per project scope in TechDirect. Upon successful testing, we will send you the screenshots of the label/ BIOS for your perusal.
The orders will be released for production upon your approval.

Thanks again.

Why have you chosen this model and OS Workstation? There must be an additional cost for the customization, and you really do not need them for personal use. A standard model should cost less and perform just as well.

I agree. Windows 11 Pro (not Pro Workstation)is best for personal use.
Hi glasskuter. They did not have a choice for regular Win11 Pro.
Do you know what the difference is between two ?
Thank You

Pro Workstation is same as Pro, but adds different out-of-box settings for "performance" and ReFS (advanced RAID management).
You could tune Pro to match Pro Workstation, but there's no guide listing all the steps. If there's no price difference, opt for Workstation.

My experience? I got a new Vostro 5890 Desktop in April, 512GB drive and 8GB RAM and it came with Win10 Pro and free license for Win11. I did all the updates to Win10 then Upgraded to Win11 Version 21H2. Just 6 days ago got Version 22H2 Build 2261.608, no problems.

The only thing I changed after setting up Win10 with its updates then the Upgrade to Win11 was to get 16GB RAM from Crucial for $80, saved about $200 over the Dell offering, 2 x 8GB modules that allows dual-channel instead of 1 module and single-channel. And it was on sale for under $700. And I added a 2TB HDD I had removed from a NAS drive to use for Data.

The one thing I didn't see in the Dell information is that it did not come with a VGA port so a $10 DisplayPort to VGA adapter solved that [needed for the 4-computer KVM I use].

Unless you have appropriate hardware to take advantage of some of Windows 10/11 Pro for Workstations features, the biggest difference is support for ReFS (who cares) and better performance if you select the Ultimate Performance power plan. This plan is not available in standard Windows 10/11 Pro but can be enabled by the command prompt or Powershell. Run either as Administrator and copy+paste the following code:
powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61
The Ultimate Performance power plan forces the Turbo Boost or equivalent feature to be always enabled (not only on games and other demanding tasks) making the system faster. Also it does better memory management.

You can also change your Windows 11 key with the generic Windows 11 Pro for Workstations key on order to upgrade to that version and test the extra features. No activation is necessary. After the grace period expires, you can change the key again with the generic Windows 11 Pro (or Home) key to downgrade to your previous version. Windows 11 will activate again automatically. You must disconnect from the internet to be able to downgrade. I don't remember the command line code to change keys and which are the generic Windows 11 keys, but you can Google them.
