Solved Need to change the color in File Explorer.

Hi. Today Microsoft changed my Desktop wallpaper, after I took care of that by replacing it with the one I had (which by the way it is the one that came by default), I found myself with another issue. I probably touched the wrong setting in Personalization, and the color of my taskbar, Start menu and File Explorer were now shiny white. Bad for my eyes. I took care of the color in Taskbar and Start menu but I haven't found how to fix the color in File Explorer.

In other words, I need help to change the color of File explorer. I would like to get what I had before MS ruined my Saturday.

This is what I had and what I want. The computer came with this color.

It’s really odd because the file icons aren't showing either, so I think it goes beyond colour changes.

Is it only that folder? Unpin and rep-in the folder if it is. Have you checked folders directly and not from Pinned Folders?

Hi antspants. No, the icons are fine. In that folder I don't have anything right now. In the second picture, from top to bottom you can see that there is nothing in there right now, I used that folder for the example because the only picture I had of Windows with the original color was of that folder.

As far as the darkening of the icons on the toolbar in the file explorer window, those will not be darker (selectable) until there are files/folders within that folder selected (highlighted). That folder is empty so none of those icons are selectable..

If you are talking about the gray color on file explorer's title bar, it is gray by default. That is one thing that can not be changed in file explorer. It is hard coded into the OS.

Hi glasskuter. My icons are fine. Ants thought that perhaps there is an issue but there is none. My issue is with the color of File explorer. If you see the third picture I posted, you can compare the difference in shade of gray, the one more darker is how it was until MS messed things up by changing the desktop wallpaper. I fixed that, but then I ended up with changes in color in task manager, start menu, taskbar and file explorer. I solved all of this except the shade of gray in File Explorer.

By the way, I love gray. But is better for my eyes, the darker shade. By the way, until now, I had not messed with any setting in Personalization. I liked the colors Windows 11 came with. I can get used to how it is now but what I want is what MS gave me the day I turned this computer on for the first time exactly one month ago. Thanks, appreciate your reply.

Bo, I've stared at it for 10 minutes and I see no difference in both your first screenshot and your second screenshot. Both of those are of file explorer. To my eyes the gray tones are the same in both of those.

In your third screenshot you are comparing the color of the title bar of Windows Photo Viewer to a Screenshot of File Explorer. Windows Photo Viewer is the old classic Windows 7 photo viewer which tells me the registry has been altered to even make it available.

As a test I opened 2 instances of file explorer. When I stack the windows I can see where the second instance of file explorer (the active window) is a darker gray than the inactive one.

Well, I feel pretty dumb right now. Let me tell you what I just did. I cut and pasted from one picture to the other and the colors.....are exactly the same.

So, the issue is a non issue.

I also had done what you did. Stare at both pictures at the same time and didn't see a difference but I felt there was a difference, I felt my explorer last night was darker than today so I interposed one picture with the other to compare and I saw a difference, and there is a difference when you do that. Doing what I did causes the colors to look different than what they really are so it fools you. If you look again, carefully, at the third picture you will see that really what fooled me was not in WPV but in File Explorer.
