Hi:
I want to copy files from my Win11's SSD to my win10's HDD. Both boxes are cabled to my router.

I do not know which credentials to enter when I am prompted from a Windows Security popup window. Should I use the router's network name & password? Or, should I use the signon Username and password for the Win11 box?

TNX for reading this post.

On the target computer,
- log in ao the desired Admin user account,
- open Terminal & use a cmd prompt window to enter the command
Echo %UserName%
then enter its response on the 'calling' computer.

If you wanted to use a Terminal, PS window then the equivalent command would be
$env:UserName

@denis: The Win11 box does not have an OS at this time. I am trying to do a Clean Install.

I was hoping to be able to network-connect to the Win11 internal SSD from my Win10 machine to rescue some files prior to doing the Clean Install process.

You could, for example,
- put the SSD in an enclosure and read it in any computer.
- sort out the existing Windows 11 installation's network and use that to read the SSD.
- boot the Windows 11 computer from an installation USB [or, more conveniently, a Macrium reflect boot USB] to read the SSD even if the Windows 11 computer cannot boot into Windows.

Would such an enclosure be useful for HDDs as well?

I made an attempt to Clean Install yesterday, using a Rufus-created installation ISO file; but Windows Setup balked; says that it cannot install win11 on a USB drive. (see Thread in
Installation, Updates and Activation forum entitled: Standard or Administrator Account @ Clean Install for details).

Would such an enclosure be useful for HDDs as well?
It would be useful for any disk with the same type of connection.
So, for example, if you got one with a [commonplace] 2.5inch SATA connection then it would also be useful for 2.5inch SATA connected HDDs.

Added later - If its connection was type M,2 [either Sata or the more modern NVMe] then its enclosure would have to be for M.2 and would have to match its Sata / NVMe type aswell. There are no HDD M.2 types.

it cannot install win11 on a USB drive
I have no idea why you tried to install to a USB drive.
Windows is generally installed to internal SSDs/HDDs.

I saw a DELL diagnostic routine at the F12 Boot menue that enabled me to scan the Win11's hardware; all hardware was passed. That led me to a DELL factory reset option. I used that reset option, and now have Windows11 Pro installed and activated on my DELL XPS-8960 desktop PC, with a Microsoft Account (Administrator). I think I also have a Local User account created at this time.

So, networking the Win11 & Win10 is still on the table to do yet (although the Win10 and my HDD drives are one-year old backup data sources). I need to learn how to add the Win10 box to my local network. Should I log on as administrator when trying to add the Win10 box to Win11 local network?

No longer attempting to install Windows on a USB drive ! No need for a SSD enclosure now.

I think I also have a Local User account created at this time.
Only if you created it as a deliberate action or if its creation was part of that Dell factory restore image.
You could run the command
net user
to see all the accounts on the computer.
- This list is arranged in three columns.
- If you'd like to post all the usernames you don't recognise if you'd like explanations of them.

Welcome to ElevenForum.

It's really worth making time to browse through the ElevenForum Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every ElevenForum page [within the Tutorials dropdown list].
- At the foot of the ElevenForum Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
- I download a new copy each month.
- By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
- ElevenForum tutorials are also listed at Tutorials and there's a shortcut to that at the top of every page.

You can search ElevenForum using the search box in the top-right corner of all ElevenForum webpages or using Advanced Search - ElevenForum
You can also search ElevenForum threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:elevenforum.com after your search term. For example,

I have just viewed Ask Leo's UT video on what's the diff between an Admisistrtor Account and a Limited User Account. Very informative.

If I correctly understand, when installing Win11, an Admiistraor Capable account is created for initial Windows Setup. This is not the "Hidden" Administrator account?

So, even though I thought I initially was using the true Admisnistraor account, it was actually a Limited (Local) Account. It seems to me that:
  • Local Account
  • User Account
  • Administrator Capable Account
all mean the same thing.

In anycase, I now have a second Limited/User/Admin Capable account, which is not needed. How do I delete that uneeded account?

I recall that under my original Windows11 installation (OEM) there was never anything listed in the lower-lefthand corner of the signon screen; now, there are two, that I must select from. (i.e., One account -- no selection needed; and, the File Manager directory tree is simpler.)

This is still very confusing symmantics/jargon for me. ....

You have been misled by your sources so some, at least, of your confusion seems to be caused by those sources using incorrect or misapplied terminology.
I am happy to deal with all your questions.
Where possible, I will give you links to relevant tutorials - they are a goldmine.

- You would do better to refer to ElevenForum tutorials than AskLeo.
- During installation, an Admin account is created [you have no choice in the matter].
- The Built-in Admin account [that has the username Administrator] is created and disabled during installation. You ought to leave it disabled. The Built-in Admin exists for one reason and one reason only [my #11] - ElevenForum
- There is no such thing as "the true Admisnistraor account". All Admin accounts are equal.
- Accounts are either Admin or Standard.
- Accounts are either Local or MSAccount-linked.

In anycase, I now have a second Limited/User/Admin Capable account, which is not needed. How do I delete that uneeded account?
I suggest you keep it. My reasoning is in my ditty - Create two spare local, password-protected Admin accounts [post #2] in Windows 10, 11 - TenForums
There is a tutorial on deleting user accounts if you are determined to do that.

I recall that under my original Windows11 installation (OEM) there was never anything listed in the lower-lefthand corner of the signon screen; now, there are two, that I must select from. (i.e., One account -- no selection needed; and, the File Manager directory tree is simpler.)
I suggest that you set up your routinely-used account for automatic login.
