OS
Windows 11 Pro β
Host: Windows 11 Pro (Beta) 22581.200 (Activated)
Hyper-V: Windows 11 Pro (Dev) 22581.200 (Unactivated)

Both systems are using the same Microsoft Account.

I had installed the Dev build in Hyper-V, did all the updates, etc., and was able to share a folder on the Dev build, loaded some files, and apps, via the Beta, and installed that stuff as well. After the final application I shut down the Dev system and all was well. A few hours later I decided to boot it back up and install some tweaks to start testing and when I went to start the build, I accidentally hit the "Revert" button when it first started and as it went to boot, it was at the "Press a key to boot from CD/DVD" and the 'disk' was blank.

So, although mad at myself I went and started over, reinstalling the Dev build from scratch. However, after updating to the latest Dev I can't for the life of me get a shared folder on either system to share the files again. When I right-click a folder and go to Properties, the Sharing Tab is missing on both systems. I had thought I worked around that on the Dev build by sharing a folder and the host system can see the computer, but when I try to open it I get an error saying I don't have permission and no way to enter credentials to get around that.

Screenshot 2022-04-02 201010.png

Any suggestions would be great, I just want to share the folder that has the apps/tweaks in it to the Dev test.

--Edit--
Before anyone suggests it... OneDrive is NOT an answer, neither is Dropbox, etc.

Are you using the default or external switch? The default is behind a NAT - you need an external switch so vms all on same subnet as host Also, all vms and host need to be on orivate rather than public than network profiles.

As cereberus says, using an external switch should give the guest VM access to shares on any other machine on the network, VM or physical.

One thing to watch for is that after any install or upgrade Password Protected Sharing is turned back on by default. On a machine that has just been upgraded you may well get that 'you do not have permission to access...' error when trying to access its shares.

I just want to share the folder that has the apps/tweaks in it to the Dev test.
As your guest is Pro, there is an alternative. A Hyper-V enhanced session can give the guest VM access to the Host's drives.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Are you using the default or external switch? The default is behind a NAT - you need an external switch so vms all on same subnet as host Also, all vms and host need to be on orivate rather than public than network profiles.
I'm using the network setting that @Brink stated in the tutorial, so my 'real' network is 192.168.1.x and the VM to host is 192.168.208.x which is fine by me cause I only want the VM and host to see each other, I do not want the VM shown on the rest of the network. Both VM and Host are set with Private Network profiles and not Public.

One thing to watch for is that after any install or upgrade Password Protected Sharing is turned back on by default. On a machine that has just been upgraded you may well get that 'you do not have permission to access...' error when trying to access its shares.
So I should turn off the password protection since I'm just sharing between the two? I haven't tried that yet.

As your guest is Pro, there is an alternative. A Hyper-V enhanced session can give the guest VM access to the Host's drives.
I think I tried Enhanced once and it showed like a curtain in front of the login screen kind of thing that wouldn't do anything... but the first time I had installed stuff I had Enhanced working, not sure how.

Oh, don't think I mentioned it in the first post, but yes the Host is fully Windows 11 compatible, I'm not doing this on a system I have to trick/force.

I'm not sure how, I did shut down the VM last night before bed and rebooted the Host this morning when I first started using it, but now when I went to the computer (via the host) it asked me for login credentials and I was able to log into the share and copy over the files. Everything is all good now (I guess).

I still can not use Enhanced Mode though. :(

Main issues preventing use of Enhanced mode are

1) installed guest version does not have RDP server (Home plus most non Windows guests)

2) installed guest has an RDP server but it is switched off.

3) Windows Hello needs to be turned off if using MS account to login to vm.

1.) Not a problem, both Host/Guest are Pro
2.) I just turned this on in the Host and Guest
3.) I only have it set to use a PIN, the rest of the options are disabled.

If using an MS account with a PIN, enhanced mode does not let you get past login page. Disable Windows Hello in guest OS (which also disables PIN), and then all works fine. Either that or use local account in VM.

Switched to a local account and it now allows Enhanced Mode, I haven't tested any of the 'enhanced' features as I don't know what they really are yet, but I'll look into it.

As I have said twice - you have to turn off Windows Hello!

Re. enhanced features - main ones are:

1) you can share drives with host without having to take them offline (or use network shares)

2) you can cut and paste from host to vm or vice versa

3) Sound only works on guest with enhanced mode

4) You can resize Hyper-V windows to what ever you wish by just dragging borders.

Look in Hyper-V tutorials for more information.
