New CO-Pilot behavior starting today

So I just noticed today the Co-Pilot app now has a strict daily limit for free users and prompts you to download the official Microsoft 365 Copilot app from the store or upgrade your account for higher limits. So if I'm understanding right basically Co-Pilot is now part of MS 365 subscription software?

Not sure if it’s related, but they are merging the two Copilots together, and they’re dropping that weirdo marshmallow mascot thing.

Copilot and Copilot 365 are scheduled to be merged by the end of September. Copilot is a separate app available in the Microsoft Store. If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription you gain unlimited use of Copilot chat. Copilot inside of Microsoft 365 (Office) apps will remain limited.

I don't have 365. I only use co-pilot within Edge.( I am logged into and syncing Edge) So far, I have not seen anything about limits. But maybe I don't use it enough to reach any limit. Also, I delete most chats when I am finished with them so my list will only show a few that I might want to go back to at any given time. Some are quite lengthy.

So it seems Co-Pilot or I should say Co-Pilot 365 as it's now called is no longer a free app if you want to ask more then a few questions in a day. Up until today I could ask unlimited questions and only had a limit on how many images I could upload to Co-Pilot. So those days are now over it would seem. Guess you'll have to look for an alternative AI source if you don't want to pay for Co-Pilot or MS-365.

So today I asked maybe half a dozen or so questions. I honestly wasn't paying that much attention until I hit the surprise paywall.

What you’re seeing is specific to the old Copilot app. Microsoft is retiring that version, and as part of the shutdown they’ve added daily limits and a banner encouraging people to move to the new unified Copilot app.

The important part is that these limits don’t apply to Copilot Chat in Edge or Windows, and they don’t mean Copilot has become part of a Microsoft 365 subscription. The new app is branded “Microsoft 365 Copilot” in the Store, but it still works for free unless you’re using the Office‑integrated features.

In other words, the daily limit you hit is just part of Microsoft deprecating the old app — not a change to Copilot Chat itself and not a requirement to subscribe to Microsoft 365.

Well that's a bit misleading and confusing as it physically locked me out on three machines until tomorrow it says. It post a notice that "you have reached your daily chat limit". Two machines downloaded MS 365 Co-Pilot automatically today when I checked the store. The Surface took me to the store with a prompt.

I've never seen anything like you're showing in post #1. I'm going to be in the middle of this merge thing just like you are. I use Copilot extensively for technical questions and learning Windows Internals. I'll certainly post if I run into anything like you did.

Your a MS 365 subscriber so you won't have a daily limit. The free limit will depend on how extensive your questions are, if you upload images or not, etc. Obviously short simple plain text questions will get you further. Course in my case with my distaste for subscription software I'll just be ditching Co-Pilot now.

Yes, I'm a Microsoft 365 subscriber. For me, if a subscription has enough value, I subscribe. If it doesn't, I don't.

Yeah, that article seems to pretty much sum it up now. Free usage will become very limited.

Will I need to pay to use the Copilot app?

You can continue to chat with Copilot, create images, upload files and more for free, subject to available capacity and limits.
When you hit a limit, you can choose to upgrade to a paid option or come back later.
For higher limits to chat and create, use agents, or tackle complex multi-step tasks, purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription.
