Solved New laptop, constantly running fan, high core temp?

Absolutely. HWINFO sits in my Start Menu, and I look at it often. I love how well HWINFO is documented. I'm always in full learn mode.

The only time I've heard the fan on my Dell XPS 16 was when making a Macrium Reflect X image, and even then, it was barely audible.

An often quoted rule of thumb for semiconductor reliability is that every 10°C increase, the lifetime approximately halves. So, running at 30-40°C higher is certainly going to impact projected lifetimes!
This is why Windows laptop usually have short life spans. Along with users not taking care of their laptops. I have seen some laptops in really bad conditions over the past 35 years.

I found a web site that I did not bookmark and like to find again. This web site showed removing the heat paper (or whatever it is called) on the bottom bezel and they used something else to allow reducing the heat around the CPU heatsink area. I cannot find this web site again and been wanting to know what they used. They even showed temperature differences (before and after). After paying $1200 for this laptop, I want it to last a while. I know that is now considered mid-range laptop pricing now of days (around in this area).

CPU cooling technology has changed some in the laptops. I didn't know this until recently dealing with Dell.

ChatGPT / Google Gemini:

I have to start with a very important correction: You should almost never use a 2mm thermal pad on a laptop CPU.

Standard thermal pads (like the Minus Pad 8) are designed to bridge large gaps between components like VRMs (voltage regulators), VRAM (memory chips), or SSDs and the heatsink. However, the CPU and GPU require direct, high-pressure contact with the heatsink. A 2mm pad is far too thick; it will act as an insulator, causing your CPU to overheat almost instantly, and it may even bend your motherboard or prevent the heatsink from touching other vital components.

1) Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad 8 (2 mm)

Primary use:
👉 VRAM, VRMs, SSDs (gap filling)

Pros
  • Soft and compressible (fills uneven gaps well)
  • Electrically non-conductive (safe)
  • Easy to install
Cons
  • Much worse thermal transfer than paste
  • Too thick for CPU dies
  • Can worsen temps if misused
👉 Verdict:
Good for memory and power components, not for CPU.

2) Thermal Grizzly KryoSheet - Graphene Thermal Pad

Primary use:
👉 CPU & GPU dies (paste replacement)

Attention:
⚠️ Electrically conductive — so it must be handled carefully around exposed components.

Pros

  • Very thin (~0.2 mm), good for direct contact
  • Extremely high thermal conductivity
  • No drying or pump-out
  • Reusable and clean
Cons
  • If it touches any small capacitors around your CPU die, it will short-circuit and kill your laptop
  • Requires a very flat, high-pressure mounting surface to work well
👉 Verdict:
High performance, but risky for a first-time DIYer due to conductivity.

3) Honeywell PTM7950 Phase Change Thermal Pad (not to be confused with the paste version)

Primary use:
👉 CPU & GPU dies (paste replacement)

Pros
  • Behaves like paste when hot (excellent contact)
  • Very stable over time (no pump-out)
  • Electrically non-conductive (safe)
  • Widely used by laptop manufacturers; some newer models use Honeywell PTM7958, which is not yet widely available to consumers.
Cons
  • Needs heat cycles to reach full performance
  • Requires careful handling as it's thin and fragile
👉 Verdict:
Best overall choice for laptop CPU cooling.

Most modern high-end gaming laptops now use Honeywell PTM7950/7958 Phase Change Thermal Pad from the factory. It performs nearly as well as Liquid Metal but is non-conductive (safe) and lasts for years without the 'pump-out' effect common with traditional thermal pastes.

PTM7950 is very soft. Put the pad in the fridge for 10 minutes before applying it so it doesn't tear when you peel the plastic film off.

Clean thoroughly: Use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol to remove old thermal paste from the CPU and heatsink.

I haven't kept up with this post but if I'm remembering correctly the laptop runs cooler if you slightly raise it up. If that's correct my first thought is that it's a design flaw with the laptop or the foot pads underneath the laptop are missing. If I was having that problem I would try using those thick stick on feet pads you can buy from stores like Walmart and/or a cooling pad.

Does not apply to AM5 Ryzen as they are designed to run at max temp for performance without damage.

I used to have a couple cooling pads for older laptops, now with the much lower power draw of many laptop processors, I haven't needed one.

Thanks. I'm rasiing it up today. But for testing pruposes I am obviously lowering it to desk as it is 'designed' to be used. If I'm tryign to prove it's running too hot (and I'm still not sure) then I don't want to do anything to lower the test temps.

If one looks into the topic, you'll see as the geometries of processors shrink, the problem with heat and heat dissipation go up. The general consensus is that the newer and smaller geometries of modern processors are exacerbating the heat and heat dissipation issue.

If one looks into the topic, you'll see as the geometries of processors shrink, the problem with heat and heat dissipation go up. The general consensus is that the newer and smaller geometries of modern processors are exacerbating the heat and heat dissipation issue.
And this will presumably be the trajectory for all processors as the manufacturers are all under the same commercial pressures. My concern is that if I were to go for RMA and Dell were to accept it, I would have the disruption of being without a laptop for a period which I cannot do for longer than a couple of weeks, then I get a new laptop which has excactly the same issues with regard to heat dissipation, as a lot of information seems to be highlighting. I think I will stick with this laptop and take my chances. When it fails, if I still need one at that point, I will replace with a MS surface pro. It seems to me that the system architecture of those sorts of devices are better designed for the modern chips and smaller profile chassis.

Thanks to all those who posted helpful advice. 🙏 But I'm now exhausted by this and Dell are still saying that the live kernal events related to graphics (as identified by zbook) are "normal". They continue to insist that the temp logs show expected behavior. Given this position I really don't think they would have agreed to an RMA unless I had gone in hard whilst I was still getting the BSOD's. So I think it is right that I have missed my chance on that. I'm afraid that life just got in the way.
