Solved New laptop, constantly running fan, high core temp?

You have pretty strong consumer rights. You could take advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau. Have you had any BSOD recently or signs of throttling or other unexpected trouble? Or is the CPU still reaching 100C?

Hi. I have addressed these questions in recent posts.
As previously posted, there have been no BSOD's since the mobo was changed.

As previously posted, temps continue to show momentary spikes to 100 degrees with throttling. Dell say this is normal.

As previously posted, book has identified live kernal events. Dell say these are normal.

Latest reply from Dell says:
"We kindly request you to capture and share all the above readings, along with any available dump files from the system.

We would also like to inform you that we have reviewed the kernel event logs shared earlier and did not observe any abnormal behaviour. As confirmed by you, the system is currently not showing any booting issues.

Regarding the fan noise, please note that it is part of the system design to maintain proper internal cooling and ensure optimal performance.

we request you to help us with information regarding random restart and shutdown whether this issue has been resolved or not.

Once we receive the requested details, we will review them and assist you further with the next steps."

I have read the entire thread! Last time you said you'd had no further BSODs was over a week ago, which is why I asked.

It sure sounds to me like Dell is really saying is "We know your system is defective but we're not willing to do anything about it". 😒

Just a side note. Some like to poop on manufacturer utilities but personally love MSI Dragon Center on my laptop. It allows manually setting throttle points for the fans. After experimenting when I first got it with the settings, it now stays around 80-85 when heavily loaded. Sure it is a laptop and gets pretty loud under heavy load but usually stays fairly quiet under medium load and almost silent under low load.

Just found thisL
Intel U processors - is this what I am seeing and why Dell is insiting nothing is wrong...

Just doing some searching for more info....
CPU Temps spiking to 100C but only under certain conditions.

The more I look, it seems that these hotter intel temps are being noted all over the place. If it is by design I don't see how I will get anywhere with Dell. I suppose this is the crux of where I am at with this really.

Heat may be detrimental to processor life. But if Intel/Dell have designed/configured this way then, rightly or wrongly, don't see how I will get anywhere. In the correspondence I have had with Dell I detect a 'catching up' by Dell frontline support as opposed to higher technical support levels as we have continued through this. Initially the message was, constantly running fan was not right, now message is, 'that is normal'. They have been pretty consistent througout with regard to reponse on high temp spikes and throttling behavior.

After this long process, somewhat like Mark UK I have now had to give up on Dell because they insist that the thermal performance I am seeing now is as designed for this processor (as quoted below). And that may be borne out by the info on Intel website....Temperature for Intel Processors

Thank you to all here who contributed so much to this and stuck with me. It was painful I know but I have decided that I cannot personally put more time into this and will have to take my chances with the machine with the mobo fault corrected, which was no thanks to Dell but with many thanks to zbook here! Something Dell have not acknowledged but which I will point out to them in my final email to them.

It maybe that the faulting mobo was impacting the thermal performance and fan speed picture initially but as soon as the mobo fault was pointed out to Dell they replaced it and fan runs quieter, if still fairly constantly in use. Dell have remained adamant on the normlacy of the thermal performance data.

I now have the upgraded SSD back in the machine with a new installation. This has not affected the thermal data readings. Fan speed remains calmer. Thanks again to all who contributed. I would probably have stuck my head in the sand many times without the prompts that came from posters here and I would have been left with a machine out of warranty with a mobo fault.

Please allow me to address your queries point by point:

1. TPM Configuration
The TPM (Trusted Platform Module) is a dedicated hardware security component present on the system. It is generally enabled by default; however, its operational state may vary depending on system configuration and user-specific settings.

2. Fan Behaviour
Yes, it is normal for the fan to run at a low level continuously, even during light usage or idle conditions. This is part of the system’s thermal management design to maintain optimal operating temperatures.

3. Temperature Spikes and Throttling at Startup
At this stage, we are unable to conclusively comment on the temperature readings shown in the images, as they are captured from a third-party application. For accurate analysis, we rely on system-level diagnostics and validated tools.

4. Impact on CPU Lifespan
No, the behaviour described is not expected to shorten the lifespan of the CPU. The system is designed with thermal safeguards that regulate performance and protect internal components.

5. Behaviour in Higher Ambient Temperatures
No, the system should not shut down under normal operating conditions, even in higher ambient temperatures such as 30°C+. The thermal design is intended to maintain safe operation within standard environmental conditions. Additionally, there is no expectation for the user to have external cooling such as air conditioning for normal usage.

We completely understand your concerns regarding performance and thermal behaviour, especially after the time you have already invested in troubleshooting. Please be assured that the system is designed to balance performance and thermals to ensure long-term reliability.
