This latest version is "only" 1,2 GB !!

What you are describing is an Insider Canary/Dev version. Much may change before/if it ever gets a public release.....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Based on the Photos App features, anything beyond 5MB is too much... šŸ˜‚

Just kidding...the insider version is quite huge yes and has probably a lot of extra stuff only used for debugging and metrics.

That's because it comes with A.I. as in Generative Erase (similar to advanced photo editing tools) - which can automatically erase a subject/object from the photo - while filling that part as if it was never there.

If still free, Photos app will be the only free photo editing app that can do that (as far i'm aware - all the other are Paid). Which makes it a nice gesture from Microsoft - definitely worth the extra size (imagine getting paid extra features for free - and complaining about the size). Also, since it's a canary build - if they include more A.I. features - the size might increase. Which again, would be a nice touch - like adding an A.I. feature similar to "Generative Fill" from PS.

Shame it currently crashes the app when you try to use it.

Still in development stages (even labeled as a preview tool), so not that surprising. Works for some...


...but not fully functional.

Anyway, in all my years of using Windows - always used alternatives to default photo or video viewer/editor - since the alternatives were superior in any way. That didn't change much - tho, the upcoming Photos app - is the first photo editing app i find useful (worth having - compared to past version - which for me proved to be just a waste of space - despite being quite small in size).

Microsoft.Windows.Photos_2024.11040.18005.0 today ......tried to install/update , failed ; error ; 0x80004005.
Previous version Microsoft.Windows.Photos_2024.11030.15001.0 works fine still............ :unsure: .
