New ssd

Hi
I have now ssd 120gb with to partions one 89 GB for windows 11 and 30 gb for Linux mint.
My user directory for windows is moved to a HDD of 2 tb and my user directory for Linux is on a 80gb . Now I see that I have 10gb free space on my windows partion.
I'm thinking to place a new ssd. What is de best a M2 ssd or a other. I think on a 250 GB or 500 for the same configuration

We would need to know what motherboard you have on your system to make a recommendation as far as performance goes. An M2 NVMe drive will yield the best performance, but whether you can run on, or if you can run at PCIe Gen 3/4/5 will make a difference.

Since you have PCIe Gen 3, the Samsung 970 EVO Plus is a great choice. The 1TB can be had for around $55 on Amazon. The 2TB is $83.99. Since you only have 1 M2 slot, I'd go with a large capacity drive to give you plenty of space.

Buy the largest SSD you can afford. All other things being equal, an SSD with more free space will probably last longer than one with less free space.

Your motherboard has a single M.2 slot. Looks like it accepts a standard 2280 NVME M.2 drive. It's a Gen3 slot, but a Gen4 drive ought to be backwards compatible with it (running at Gen3 speeds).

That would be the fastest option.

The only down side to an M.2 drive is that it might get warm if it's heavily used. That could cause it to thermal throttle, lowering its performance. (But not damaging it.) M.2 drives with heat sinks are available.

A gen 4 isn't necessarily any faster in a Gen 3 slot than a gen 3 drive. Perhaps if you later pulled it out and put in into another machine you might benefit.

I've never had a heat problem with my Gen 3 or 4 NVME's. I have 9 of these across a handful of machines and none of them run a heat sink and I don't believe i've ever noticed any throttling.

A gen 3 drive or a Gen 4 drive limited by the interface, will run cooler as it is, so I would hope the OP woud be just fin.

So a pcie 4 will work in q pcie 3?
And k need it only to boot up so I think a 500 gb is enough not
My user directory for win 11 is o. The 2bd an for Linux on the 80 gb portion on the 160gb hd

I haven't noticed it, myself. It may only appear with heavy use for extended periods of time. Most of us may never see it.

Sure.

You wouldn't want to pay extra for Gen4, unless you wished to allow it to be transplanted to a Gen4 capable machine later.

Well a 500GB Samsung 870 Evo Plus is $40. A 1TB is $54.99. The real question is whether you want to save $15 for 1/2 the storage. Personally, i would go bigger and have room for OS and more apps. These drives are faster.

And larger drives have more write endurance, although that may not matter to most people.

Or the OP can get the better Samsung 980 Pro 1TB drive for $60 bucks. That even if it's gen 4 speed aren't supported, it's still a better drive. And its ready for future systems.
