Hi everyone, First at home. poster here. Apologies if this has been answered.

I currently have 2 PCs and a laptop all running win10 at home. None are win11 capable. I loath the idea of replacing these relatively new machines so it got me thinking, can I install an inexpensive PC running win11 to act as a "gateway" (intermediary) with the internet so that it's security shields my win10 machines from the security threats that will occur after win10 expires? Is this possible? If the answer is yes I'll be looking for the ways and means. Thank you very much!

Windows 10 will be supported until October 2025.
After that, Microsoft will probably offer Paid support for Windows 10 for another couple of years.

As for your idea, if the Windows 10 computers are not connected to the internet, that would work. But why have computers that can't be online?

The potential exception would be if the PCs are really old, and lack some hardware instructions (SSE 4.2 or SSE 4.A) that are required for the latest release of 11, which is 24H2.

You have almost a year to decide which path to follow.

As @bobkn said... you CAN install Win 11 on non-compatible computers.
There are quite a few ways to do so.

You can avoid the minimum hardware requirements, however after the next big Windows Update, you would have to redo it. And Microsoft may block the patches that avoid the hardware requirements in the future.

There is nothing to worry about for the next 11 months anyways

A lot also depends on what you do with your computers.
If you're not a billionaire, and just go to normal/clean sites... you can probably run Win 10 for the next 20 years.

In other words... if you're not on someone's hacking radar, you'll be fine.
There's still people running Windows 7. :-)

All modern routers have Network Address Translation which is a firewall that protects you from outside threats being pushed to the computers from the WAN side. Add an up-to-date anti-virus software and it will help to alert you if you do something to bring a virus in past the firewall. A server computer may offer very limited protection if internet server protection software is installed on it.

Do you have any opinion about the significance of not receiving security updates for the OS? (I have no clue about that.)

To answer your question, I have never heard of such a thing being done.. The closest thing would be to use remote desktop from a windows 10 computer to a windows 11 computer, and use the browser on 11 to connect to the web. However, only one RDP connection can be possible at a time so only one of the 10 machines could have an active remote desktop connection.
The Windows 11 machine would have to be running Windows 11 PRO. The machines connecting to it can be home or pro. However, long term, I can't see this being practical at all.

Once 10 is no longer supported get a good antivirus and install on all your machines and keep on trucking until they die.
Or as was mentioned, use one of the workarounds to install 11 on the incompatible machines. If you don't want to do either of those, Install one of the Linux distros on your machines, Mint Cinnamon or Ubuntu are great for beginners and will do anything you want to do.

I'm not understanding why you are now asking about a networking forum?
Your original post was about upgrading to Windows 11 on machines that do not support it.

I loath the idea of replacing these relatively new machines so it got me thinking, can I install an inexpensive PC running win11 to act as a "gateway" (intermediary) with the internet so that it's security shields my win10 machines from the security threats that will occur after win10 expires? Not sure remoting into a Win11 machine would be the best way, the machines would still be on the same network and equally exposed to the internet.

If you are buying hardware, then buy a Custom router mini PC, load up PFsense (other OS's are available) and build your self a more secure network or subnet, with a locked down firewall and Whitelist of what you want to be able to use/access. can have built in AD blocking, tracking blocks etc.
Great learning experience to, this is really about how at risk you feel you are depending on how you use the computers.

it's definitely taking it to the extreme, because as long as your browser is up to date, and you have up to date security, you "should" be ok.
