Laptop not used for a few weeks, as we use desktops at home, modern laptop with Windows 11 and up to date when put away.
This morning started and I requested check for updates.
Took an hour or more before it was finished.
It updated with 4 updates...I didn't see when it finished.
On return to it it is showing No Bootable Device.
'Ctrl Alt Delete' clears the screen but the message returns after a few seconds.
Can't switch off.
Any help please
1. Force a Complete Shutdown
Since it can’t shut down normally:
Press and hold the power button for 10–15 seconds until the screen goes black.
Wait 10 seconds and press the power button again to try turning it on.
2. Check Boot Order / UEFI Settings
If the “No Bootable Device” message persists:
Power on the laptop and immediately press the key to enter BIOS/UEFI. Common keys: F2, F10, F12, Del, or Esc (your laptop’s manual will tell you).
In the BIOS/UEFI menu, check:
Boot order: Make sure your main drive (SSD/HDD) is first in boot priority.
Drive detection: Ensure your SSD/HDD is detected. If it’s missing, the drive may have become disconnected or corrupted.
Save and exit BIOS. Try booting again.
3. Attempt Windows Automatic Repair
If BIOS sees the drive but Windows won’t boot:
You’ll need a Windows 11 installation USB (can be made on another PC using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool).
Boot from the USB by selecting it in the BIOS boot menu.
Choose Repair your computer ? Troubleshoot ? Advanced options ? Startup Repair.
Follow the prompts. This can often fix boot loader issues caused by updates.
4. If the Drive Isn’t Detected
If the SSD/HDD doesn’t appear in BIOS, this might indicate:
A loose or disconnected drive (rare in laptops, but possible if jostled).
A hardware failure (drive or motherboard).
In that case, professional repair or drive replacement may be required.
5. Preventive Note
Windows updates sometimes fail on modern laptops if the system is powered off mid-update, or if the fast startup/hybrid shutdown features interfere. When storing laptops, it’s safer to fully shut down (not sleep or hibernate) to avoid partial updates.
