No Sound with reinstalled (repaired) W 11

Many thanks again, guys. I have been looking at numerous videos (Youtube etc). Despite how simple the video guys seem to succeed, nothing they show actually helps my case. Helmut has suggested running DISM and SFC. I'm afraid I am most reluctant to do this as I will be very much out of my depth. (I don't even know what these items are). I do not wish to totally screw up my computer !! This stuff is for experts like you guys!
I find this all very frustrating, especially as the partition which holds the C- drive and W11 also holds the Realtek drivers used by W10 (which is in a different partition). My speaker icon at the bottom of the screen states that "no audio device is installed". As the audio devices do actually exist, I assume this message means that W11 cannot find the drivers for these devices.
Also, I am reluctant to reinstall/repair W11 again. I do not mind that it takes 2.5 hours. I just do not expect that it will be any better next time round.
Your further comments will be most welcome. If I had any hair left, I would pull it out !!! Brian

Sod the videos.
Concentrate on installing the driver.
How did you get on extracting the zip file contents and then running the setup.exe file?

Hello. sfc/scannow is very easy and simple and will not do any harm at all - if I can do it, then so can you :-) It's a scan to see if any windows filles are corrupted. If it finds any, it will repair them and tell you that when the scan has finished. If it doesn't find any, then it'll report no issues,

So to do that you just type cmd in the search bar for command prompt - on the window that opens to select command prompt, select "run as administrator". When the black command prompt box opens, just type

sfc/scannow

Make sure the slash is the right way round.

Try not to worry. I had something similar recently with sound - windows had installed different drivers. The difference was, the sound was just extremely quiet. I had to fiddle in sound settings to improve it. I think I also found the realtek drivers wouldn't install. Can't remember what I did in the end.

A quick question - have you tried uninstalling the drivers/removing the device and then restarting? This should reinstall the drivers and make the device show up again. The drivers will probably come via Windows update, so you could put windows updates on pause and then try installing the Realtek drivers.

Don't spend time doing anything else until the driver extraction & installation issue has been resolved or proved to be irresolvable.

Many thanks again. To Try3: I agree with "sod the videos!!!" When I got to setup.exe I double clicked it and after a few seconds I got the small screen which I showed in last Monday's communications i.e. "compressed zip file error". To Hazel123 - thanks for the encouragement. I just ran sfc/scannow and it shows everything if fine. Of course, my speaker icon still shows "no audio device is installed".
In the Device Manager screen, I went to "Action/Add driver". I tried a manual installation by browsing to C:\system32\drivers etc. I got the feedback "The specific location contained no driver package (.INF) files". I seem to be running out of options. Brian

When I got to setup.exe
Did you extract the zip file contents or merely browse within it?
Its contents need to be extracted - that error message makes me think you have not done so.

I think this was the same issue I had with realtek drivers and I believe I gave up and left the installed drivers - but I did have some sound, and just managed to increase it by fiddling with sound settings. However it sounds like @Try3 has some solutions. In my case there was no zip file. I was beginning to think, when this happened with me, that the Realtek drivers just didn't work in Windows 11. Although obviously mine is a different make of laptop so different drivers.

Also just a question. In device manager, are you looking at "Sound, video and game controllers"? As opposed to "Audio Inputs and outputs"? the former is the driver needed I think.

Brian,

In the Device Manager screen, I went to "Action/Add driver".
Well, don't do that.
Please read posts #17 & #26 and take the necessary action.

Don't spend time doing anything else until the driver extraction & installation issue has been resolved or proved to be irresolvable.

Hi Guys: I will respond in the order of the above recent postings:
1. Try3: I did extract the zip files i.e. I double-clicked in the downloaded zip file and received a (long) list of files including a number of .exe files. I double-clicked the setup.exe and received the screen in post 16.
2. Hazel: yes, I am looking at Sounds, video and game controller.
3. Denis. I believe that I have followed the guidance from posts 17 and 26.

I have not yet followed the thread provided by Hazel 123. I will do so after I post this reply.
Thanks, Brian

It sounds like you needed to right click the zip file and select "extract all" rather than double click the zip file - a new folder will then appear with the unzipped contents, and you then double click the setup.exe in that new folder - wherever you've saved it to. Unless we have misunderstood :-)
