Norton controlling Firefox?

Under settings > privacy does it list any extension as controlling the password settings?
Can't see anything - just the same policy link at the top. Just wondering if Firefox itself put it there. I also had a Firefox update yesterday or the day before. In the policy documentation, these are some of the things listed (it's a very long list)

Make an exception for Firefox in Norton AV.
The settings in Norton 360 are so complicated and diverse these days I can't even find where to do that! The old control panel was simple but that seems to have been removed over the past year (used to be able to opt for it).

Look for something that says Add exception or maybe Manage exceptions.

It should be somewhere in the antivirus settings.

Here... I found it... this is for Norton 360.
Here's the link to the PDF...

Hi, Hazel

Some things to try:

1. In Firefox:
- Open Firefox menu (three lines) > Settings
- Search for "certificates" in the settings search bar
- Go to "View Certificates"
- Look for and remove any Norton certificates if present

2. In Norton 360:
- Open Norton 360
- Click on "Device Security"
- Click "Settings" (gear icon)
- Go to "Web Security"
- Look for "Browser Protection" or similar settings
- Disable Firefox-related protection features

Alternative method:
1. Uninstall Norton's browser extensions from Firefox:
- Open Firefox menu
- Select Add-ons and Themes
- Go to Extensions
- Remove any Norton-related extensions

2. If Norton Add-ons keeps reinstalling:
- In Norton 360, disable the auto-install feature for browser extensions
- Or create an exception for Firefox in Norton's settings

If these steps don't work, you might need to:
1. Check Firefox's enterprise policies
2. Reset Firefox's security settings

the item that you want to exclude from scans.
8 Click OK.
Thank you. I think that might be the old style panel - it was easy to find things on that one. The new style panel is all over the place! I did try putting exclusions in the search box and it came up with four options

Intrusion prevension exclusions
Scans exclusions
Antivirus exclusions
Safe web exclusions (I'm not using safe web)

You can add an exclusion in one of those sections.

1. In Firefox:
- Open Firefox menu (three lines) > Settings
- Search for "certificates" in the settings search bar
- Go to "View Certificates"
- Look for and remove any Norton certificates if present

2. In Norton 360:
- Open Norton 360
- Click on "Device Security"
- Click "Settings" (gear icon)
- Go to "Web Security"
- Look for "Browser Protection" or similar settings
- Disable Firefox-related protection features

Alternative method:
1. Uninstall Norton's browser extensions from Firefox:
- Open Firefox menu
- Select Add-ons and Themes
- Go to Extensions
- Remove any Norton-related extensions

2. If Norton Add-ons keeps reinstalling:
- In Norton 360, disable the auto-install feature for browser extensions
- Or create an exception for Firefox in Norton's settings

If these steps don't work, you might need to:
1. Check Firefox's enterprise policies
2. Reset Firefox's security settings
Thanks. No Norton addons or extensions - I specifically didn't add those. Search certificates in Firefox produced masses of entries! From all kinds of places. There is a Norton web mail/shield root in there but pretty sure I have that disabled in Norton. Or not opted for. No date next to it. How do you re-set Firefox security settings?

How do you re-set Firefox security settings?

The easy way is to probably “Refresh Firefox” but this is something you may not want to do.

Here are some steps related to resetting Firefox, if you choose to go that way:

To reset Firefox security settings back to their default state, you can use the "Refresh Firefox" feature, which will restore the browser to its original configuration while saving your important data. This process effectively clears custom settings and add-ons, returning Firefox to its factory defaults. Alternatively, you can manually reset preferences by deleting or renaming the prefs.js file within your Firefox profile folder.

Refresh Firefox (Recommended):
  • Click the menu button (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner of the Firefox window.
  • Select "Help" and then "Troubleshooting Information".
  • Click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the right side of the page.
  • Confirm the refresh by clicking "Refresh Firefox" again.
  • Firefox will close and reopen, restoring it to its default state.

This post at Mozilla basically outlines the issue you’re having with both organisation management and security software:

it’s likely Norton will keep injecting the policy until it’s told not to, however possible.

However, in Nord VPN settings, all "threat protection" is turned off. So maybe not.

I didn’t realise you had Nord running.

According to what I found:

Nord VPN itself is not designed to cause Firefox to display the "Your browser is being managed by your organization" message. This notification is typically triggered by security software that uses Group Policy Object (GPO) rules to inject root certificates into Firefox. These certificates allow the software to intercept and scan internet traffic.

The likelihood that Norton has done this is greater. The notification is typically triggered by security software that uses Group Policy Object (GPO) rules to inject root certificates into Firefox. These certificates allow the software to intercept and scan internet traffic.

Yes I think you're right, it's Norton. Seems impossible to get rid of.

I have found some powershell scripts but I wouldn’t run any of them unless I hade a system image created in case of disaster

It’s getting dangerous.

I don’t want to sound like I am telling you what to do, but let me tell you what to do :P

Get rid of Norton 360.
It shouldn’t be this complicated.
Having said that, I don’t know how other AV’s work, I know mine doesn’t do this.
