https://norton.com/products/genie-scam-detector check emails, texts, social media messages for potential scams.
There’s currently an app for Apple devices but not Android.

I had a look at the website, still in early access phase. Regardless, It would still need ones undivided attention. Imagine being device illiterate and trusting in an app that could very well make a miss-calculation on scam/legitimate. And if it made that miss-calculation, it could cost someone dearly.

@Bastet, have you installed it on any device and had a look at all? If so what do you think of it?

@antspants I have installed it on my iPad, I as yet haven’t had a scam email other that a dodgy link supposedly from a friend, the app stated it didn’t have enough information on the link so a bit of a fail.
The feedback is all poor though with users stating the app misses obvious scams by claiming they’re clean/not scams.
I suspect it is too early to tell whether it is good software or not. Due diligence with scam/spam is still first & foremost.
If people solely rely on the app/site to check for scams then currently it’ll fail them.

I always advise people (and teach how) to check the from address.

The best communication emails I get from delicate sources, are from my countries Gov site, it’s called MyGov. They send you a simple no frills email with no links or advice other than to log-in to your portal and check your messages. I think it’s a good practice that should be adopted by all entities that require sensitive or monetary communications.

Same here, also to hover the cursor over any links to see if they point to the genuine site.

Hello fellow members,

I use Spamfilter on my Iphone 13 from App Store and i suddenly received quite a few DPD re-schedule delivery e-mails and i always check with the company which carrier they use ..now if they use DPD i always check with official DPD website and enter the tracking number given and i check on suspicious e-mails and the details are totally bogus.The i enter DPD in blacklist on Spamfilter.
I do get DPD deliveries but these are genuine .

On my pc i use Mailwasher which i like as you enter tags similar to Spamfilter.

Everyone have their own preferences and i prefer simple programs.

Seems more like an AI app for seniors - or at least people who are not tech savvy in the least. I mean, what experienced internet user - can't figure out if a gievn "text" or "image" is a scam...

You could buy that for your mom or grandma - but still have to teach her how to "add" text or "upload" an image to the app/site.

detecting malware and viruses is one thing but if people are trying to sell you a reliable "Scam checker" then the chances are it´s a scam itself. Detecting scams requires an unbelievably high amount of A.I and we are a long way from that yet. Most scams don´t work on the basis of "rogue software" but on seemingly perfectly normal human actions.

For instance one scam that seems to rear its head from time to time is if you´ve ordered a service from say a builder / lawyer etc you get an email ostensibly from the builder etc saying "Ive changed my bank account -- please pay into xxxxxx". A lot of people would just do it !!!¨without checking first with their builder etc. How´s computer software going to have a go with that sort of thing. E-mail "washers" are relatively defenceless against that sort of thing since email addresses can easily be spooked.

Other scams of similar ilk, products "ordered" which you didn't and a whole slew of other ones.

Keep A/V for what it's intended to do -- prevent malware etc from attacking your machine.

For scams etc the 100% BEST defence bar none is TO USE BRAIN. Sometimes also the various consumer warning type of programs on TV can often give warnings and identify rogue traders.

Suspect all it does is check links, the ‘from’ information & the grammar of the email/website/text. The information via the site shouldn’t be relied upon certainly.
