Hi folks
I found this on the web - I'm confident in the provenance of this post so those who like publisher will have to keep older versions of office running as a VM if the want to continue using it.

Microsoft's TJ Devine announced in a March 15 blog post that Office 2024 LTSC will ship without Publisher, which the company is retiring, or Teams, which is available to download elsewhere.22 Mar 2024

I can check that on my copy of Office LTSC 2024 Pro that publisher doesn't exist but it still includes Project and Visio. Project I like - and use quite regularly -- Visio is probably of more use to people making flowcharts whether of computer code or engineering processes. IMO there's much better software for that around.

One thing that still surprises me is that Access is still around -- it's a HIDEOUS system. not multi-user - why people just don't go for the infinitely better , faster, and Free Mariadb is just a mystery to me.

Anyway here's my version (work supplied so VL) of Office LTSC 2024. It's the preview version so I'd imagine the retail versions won't have Project and Visio as these are more used by businesses and the preview was only available to businesses.

MS Publisher is my most important part part of the whole Office suite, used it since first version, of my 2016 office only Word and Excel are used and installed.
Can't believe older Office versions wouldn't become normally unusable. I payed good money for it and certainly not going to buy 2024.

Hi there

Interesting thing to try out. The viewer will still work I'm sure as that's a separate program not part of the office suite.

Have you got any way of installing a stand alone version of Publisher from any previous versions of office -- then I could test it.

Would the .exe file from office 2021 (plus any dll's) work.

However if there's a big backlash on publisher then Ms might re-consider -- after all XP went for years after it's official EOL - or there might be a way of running bits of two versions of office simultaneously.

Cheers

There is a separate (from office suite) Publisher but if whole office stops working I doubt that would continue to work either, If they don't make 2024 version there wouldn't be any. I like using Publisher because you can embed all other parts in it.

I'm having a go at installing the separate publisher 2021 (VL) from work system -- seems to be installing OK -- I'll fire it up to see if it works in stand alone mode without killing Office 2024.

If it does I'll post back -- and perhaps you can suggest how I can test if it can still function with other apps from the latest office suite. But at least a stand alone version for many is better than nothing !!!!!

Will post later

Testing everything in a VM currently. Windows latest W11 Enterprise - Canary version.

publisher 2021 installs and runs OK with Office 2024 untouched
and uses same theme

Office 2024 fine

So how can I test the bits you are worried about -- I haven't used publisher for years - but at least the stand alone version continues to work without hosing up Office 2024.

(slightly OT but IMO office 2024 is well worth having when it hits retail as a load of the Office/365 stuff that disn't make it in to even office 2021 has been incorporated into this release - particularly if you are an EXCEL power user).

I do at least try and test things when I'll say I'll do them.

Am enjoying on TV the World Snooker from Sheffield in the UK so quite OK to be working on this while I've got the snooker on another monitor !!!!. Got SKY TV here so it's on "The red button" since the BBC seem to be switching viewers all over their other channels every 5 mins !!!.

This is my MS Publisher version from Office 2019 but I didn't see any updates since I had Office 2013 and probably none since 2000.

Tnx, good to know but what would happen to Publisher itself if whole office stops working ? My plan is to stay with Office 2019. I upgraded from 2013 only because it was kinda borrowed from a printing company i did some work for and 2 years after they wanted the license back to use on one of their PCs. Cheapskates. 🍸

I can't see Office stopping working -- it's too much of a money spinner for Ms - still easily by far the most popular office suite for businesses on the entire planet, If Office stops working then it's probably due to N,korean or Iranian Nukes - in which case I'd think we've got other things to worry about !!!.

Doesn't seem to have problems importing excel.xlsx from excel 2024 into publisher 2021 -- (import object / import file or whatever).

I'm no expert at this but I got this from an excel spreadsheet where I used data imported into EXCEL from a query to a test mariaDB.

No idea how to format this stuff but the doc seems to contain the spreadsheet.

printed as a pdf (microsoft pdf printer -- too much hassle to get physical printer out for this VM).

here's the pdf (opened in firefox browser)

So i'd surmise that you can use publisher 2021 with components from other parts of the office 2024 suite.

Time now for one great thing the Scots have produced on this planet -- glass of single malt whisky !!!.

Office was first place where "OLE" was introduced, you can work with Excel spreadsheet just like Excel was open, text as with Word or pictures in paint with immediate results shown and have all ready for printing or even exporting to Powerpoint. That's why I like publisher so much although it could be done from Word too. just more complicated. MS is also killing Wordpad which is a mini MS Office Word version and exists since W95.

If you add insert object -->excel etc then EXCEL opens -- do your EXCEL stuff and it's all kosher.

Seems IMHO to be OK -- but who am I with limited knowledge of this stuff.

Screenshot_20240420_132317.png

The insert object gives you loads of possibilities that are dynamically loaded.

Screenshot_20240420_132611.png

Be careful --I'm like a dog with a bone when I get interested in stuff people say is impossible. !!!!

E.g you want power point

Screenshot_20240420_133328.png

I'm sure this is sufficient for 99,99% of users who want to keep using publisher -- note I haven't tried with publisher 2019 -- I'm testing with bits of Office 2021.

Anyway over & Out on this.

There is a 2024 publisher which is supposed to be supported until 2026 so why not ship it and just leave us hanging at end of support like they do with everything else. I can install publisher 2024 but it vanishes when office updates.
