This is not my main PC and so anything tried and that fails or breaks doesn't matter as such.

I'm led to believe that 25H2 is as high as I can go with a clean install and by using Rufus to bypass all requirements in creating a bootable installation media. Is that correct? The Dell is legacy Bios with no option to use UEFI, it runs an i5 2430M Sandy Bridge CPU.

Would 26H2 be do-able or not and if it might be then by what method?

An Intel Core i5-2430M cannot officially run Windows 11 26H2 because Microsoft requires an 8th-generation Intel processor or newer, UEFI Secure Boot, and TPM 2.0. [1, 2, 3]
However, users on platforms like Reddit have reported that you can unofficially install and run Windows 11 on older second-generation Core processors by using bypass tools (such as Rufus) to skip the CPU, TPM, and Secure Boot checks during installation. [1, 2, 3]

Windows 11 version 26H2 requires a compatible 64-bit processor with a clock speed of 1 GHz or faster, featuring 2 or more cores. [1]

Core Processor Specifications
    • Clock Speed: 1 GHz or faster
    • Cores: 2 or more cores
    • Architecture: Compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)
    • Instruction Sets: Must support SSE 4.2 (for Intel) or SSE 4A (for AMD), along with the POPCNT (Population Count) instruction, which are strictly enforced to boot and run the OS.

Yes, an Intel Core i5-2430M processor supports both SSE4.2 and popcnt. [1, 2]

Core Details
    • Architecture: Sandy Bridge (2nd Generation Intel Core, released in 2011). [1, 2]
    • SSE4.2 Support: Fully included in the processor's instruction set alongside SSE4.1. [1]
    • POPCNT Support: Included natively via the popcnt flag, as it is part of the SSE4.2 instruction introduction for Intel Nehalem and newer microarchitectures.

Any other compatibility issues should be able to be handled with RUFUS, as mentioned in post #2
