Repair Format Volume Greyed Out Using CMD​

A way to fix the "Format" option not working in Windows 11/10/8/7 is by CMD. You can make it with the command below.

Step 1. Type cmd in the search box. Right-click on Command Prompt and choose "Run as administrator".

Step 2. On the Command Prompt black window, type diskpart and press "Enter". Then, type the following command lines in order.

  • Type list disk and press "Enter". All the disk drives will be listed, including your external drives.
  • Type select disk + disk number, select disk 0 and press enter.
  • Type create partition primary and press "Enter".
  • Type format fs=ntfs and press "Enter".
  • Typing assign to assign a drive letter to the newly created partition.

Keep in mind, you can always make smaller partitions later. But that's enough for now.

The reason that the option to Format did not appear when you right clicked on the unallocated space above is because the disk was not initialized, and because there was no partition created on it yet that could be formatted.

so now the next question is, i want to clone / image the C drive onto the new 2TB drive, so what is the best way to do this, probably going to be using Macrium reflect.

No, he just wants to use Macrium to create disk images onto the 2 TB drive. That's exactly what I use one of mine for.

Scott can you offer any further help as to the best way to clone or image the C drive onto the new 2TB drive, and do I need to particion before or after doing the clone or image process?
