Old Wi-Fi Security Standard Being Phased Out.

Hi,

Got a new Windows 11 Laptop which has only Wi-Fi connectivity (no wired connector).

Keep getting the following error:- “This Wifi network uses an old security standard that's being phased out. We recommend connecting to a different network”.

After a period of use the Wi-Fi stops working and can only be made to work again by using a system restore to an earlier time when it was working.

Don’t want to change my router – I have other Wi-Fi devices on the network that will not work with the more secure standard.

Is there a way to stop Windows 11 from disabling my use of the old Wi-Fi security standard, such as a change in Registry for example ?

Don’t see why Microsoft should be able to say I can’t use whatever Wi-Fi standard that I want to use – it’s nothing to do with them.

when my Asus Zenbook was running Windows 11 (22H2?), and switched to EDGE (was FF), it got similar warning every time when start. I did upgrade my router. no warning any more since new router.

Wow, how ancient are your systems that you cannot use more current WiFi standards? I have a laptop that is almost 15 years old and works great with today's WiFi. Or is it non-Windows systems that you have with this problem? If so, what types of devices (be specific). Maybe we can make some suggestions.

If it is Windows systems that you are saying would be a difficulty, then are you SURE that your existing systems won't work? My suggestion would be to go into the WiFi setting and see what options are available to you. As an alternative, post here what WiFi adapters those systems use and we can lookup the details and try to assist you.

are you able to check to see if the router has a firmware update available for it.
which should allow more then one type of security standard.

The only issue I have with a couple old Notebooks is the Wireless/Wi-Fi is on 2G but by Router is 2G/5G so I use a USB Dongle that gives me the newer, somewhat easier and maybe cheaper than finding an internal Wireless adapter. One Notebook is only 3 years old and the built-in 5G will work for several minutes then drop to a third of the download speed of the 2G so I use an EdiMax USB Dongle [about $20] for consistent full speed.

Welcome to the forum. Maybe you can also tell us a little bit about your network. Router make/model. Is it set up as wpa2? If not what? Is wireless network password protected.

WPA2 standard replaced WPA in 2004. Is your router and your devices older than that?
