Then the only solution is to dump photos as it is obviously not fit for purpose, I am a serious Photographer and I can say that as far as I can recall, I opened it once when first installed and quickly closed it and got rid of it - Of course I have many Pro level options so Photos is no loss

No, I never referred to Win10, no idea where you got that idea from.
That app is for Windows 11, and I'm surprised your Windows didn't auto-install it from Store.
It usually auto-installs along with the HEIF Image Extensions app, VP9 Video Extensions app etc.

I can read it clearly in your post Alibi. The app you recommend is not for Windows 11

The link provided does auto expand and the detail does state windows 10.

This is a result of the way that Windows 11 is built, it still shows windows 10 in its internal codings. This is I think on purpose to assist the use of Windows apps designed for Windows 10, on windows 11 systems.
The vast majority of basic apps and applications written for 10 work with 11, except those that work at the kernel level, which has been re-written. In most ways win11 is just a re skinning of win10

@GeneralLee01 , As Photos is an app and not a .exe file it can't open WEBP photos.
Not ideal I know but an alternative, even if you only use it just for WEBP, is JPEGview and comes in at a hefty 1.85 MB. It has some editing features as well so I think it's worth looking at and you can always uninstall if not suitable,

Thanks Alibi. In your post Win10 is clearly stated. Perhaps it is automatically copied from another website but is clearly in your post.

What will that download do for me? I have no problem viewing WEBP image. Issues is using WIN11 PHOTO and thumbnails.

Also it seems impossible for me to install that download, see screenshot below.

Above image states the download it to to display webp in Microsoft Edge, but i can already do that. I assumed that this is standard in Win11.

Thanks Fabler, gonna test it right now. Will it get me WEBP thumbnails in Fileexplorer as well ? . . . a little later, no webp thumbnail on my system using the tool. But still gonnan test it a few day to see how I like it because it seems dang fast and images look good.

I've got that already as on the Dev channel. The thumbnails are produced by the browser, in my case it's Edge. Just tested more and you can save jpegs etc as WEBP or any other file or vice versa. This is how the test WEBP file shows in my downloads folder.

You need to search for browser extensions (add-ons), which allow you to save WEBP images as JPEG. This is separate from having the MS Store WEBP extension installed.

Google "[browser] webp extension" and pick one of the better rated suggestions.

@GeneralLee01
My main photo browser/viewer is the Photos app. I have this problem too (since its release date!). Even Photoshop has added webp format in its format support list recently (we had have to add a webp plugin to its plugin folder before, to be able to open them in Ps!), Microsoft has hesitation to add webp format directly into the Photos app, yet (yes, cause Google is its competitor!). They have added webp extension in the 22H2 update (you don't need to go to Store and download it anymore!). But the Photos app doesn't recognize it as an image format but Edge...!

The only thing you need is renaming webp formats to be recognizable (!) by the Photos app. Most of the webp images (almost all of them) are from social nets (Insta, Facebook, Dribbble ...) because their servers need an efficient image format which gets less room! WEBP is a lossy format but has more quality and less size in comparison with JPG/JPEG. Just do a trick (like me!), every time you want to save an image (which is webp) from a browser or anywhere, type a " (double quote) at the first and the end of the file name and its extension, then change its extension (webp) to JPG. You can also rename the batch files with CMD. Just put all your webp images into one folder, go to that folder then open CMD, type:
Ren *.webp *.jpg

You can also open webp with ST (snipping Tool), then save it as JPG (you can also do it in the Photos app). In this case, also the format would be changed (not just the name of the file). An image conversion happens!

The webp extension is already installed with 22H2 update:

Changing file extension while saving it on PC:

Batch rename image file extension with CMD:
